Job Title: Staff Nurse - Band 5
Department: Day Surgery Ward
Location: 20 Devonshire Place, London
Salary: Dependent on experience
Hours: 37.5 hours per week, working a mix of early, late and long day shifts. The service operates from 7.00am to 8.30pm. One late or long shift each week finishes at 9.30pm to support evening day case theatre lists.
Contract: 12-month fixed term contract starting 1st February 2027
Join our Day Surgery Unit as a Band 5 Staff Nurse and play an important part in helping patients feel confident and cared for throughout their surgical journey. This 12-month maternity cover opportunity offers the chance to work with patients having a variety of planned procedures, supporting them from admission through to recovery and safe discharge home.

A little about the role
You will be responsible for supporting patients from admission through to recovery and, often, discharge on the same day, making sure they have the information and reassurance they need to recover at home.
We are looking for a nurse with acute surgical ward experience, particularly in ophthalmic and general surgery, who enjoys the pace and variety of day surgery. You will use your clinical skills to care for patients safely before and after their procedures, while taking time to listen, answer questions and help them feel at ease. Working closely with your ward colleagues, consultants and the wider clinical team, you will help make each patient's experience as smooth as possible.
This is a 12-month maternity cover opportunity. We are ideally looking for someone to start on 1 February 2027, although we can be flexible with the start date for the right person. The role includes one late or long shifts each week, finishing at 9.30pm, to support patients on the ward during the evening.
What you'll be doing
- Assess and care for patients from admission to discharge, adapting your approach to their individual needs.
- Provide preoperative and postoperative care so patients feel prepared, supported and safe.
- Recognise and escalate changes in a patient's condition so they receive timely care.
- Administer medicines, including intravenous medicines, in line with your competence and Clinic policies.
- Work with colleagues across the multidisciplinary team to coordinate care and plan safe discharges.
- Keep clear, accurate records to support continuity of care.
- Share your knowledge with students and new colleagues and take charge of the ward when senior staff are absent, where appropriate.

What we're looking for:
- Active NMC registration.
- At least one to two years of post-registration experience working on an acute surgical ward.
- Experience caring for patients before and after surgery, including assessing their needs and recognising when to escalate concerns.
- Knowledge of general surgery and ophthalmic care.
- Clear communication and a caring approach to patients and colleagues.

In our Day Surgery Ward, you will join a nursing team caring for patients before and after a wide range of planned procedures. Days can be busy, with patients arriving, recovering and preparing to go home, so colleagues work closely together to make sure each person receives safe, attentive care.
