Staff Nurse - Band 5
About the Role
We have an exciting opportunity at our Dulwich Renal Satellite Unit which is located at Tessa Jowell Health Centre. Our unit comprises of a diverse team and promotes personal and professional development.
You will be involved in assisting the unit manager to drive forward quality patient-centred compassionate care as well as assisting and supporting the team to attain efficiency and sustain standards.
This is an ideal opportunity for a Band 5 nurse to utilise and enhance their mentoring skills, leadership qualities, time management, and independent working.
You will have 2 weeks supernumerary and the opportunity to work alongside senior nurses and practice development nurses. You will have your Assessor and Supervisor assigned to you.
As a Band 5 staff nurse, you are expected to understand the principle of haemodialysis including connecting and disconnecting patients on haemodialysis. You are required to commence patients on haemodialysis and discontinue treatment in a safe manner as well as lining and priming of haemodialysis machines, troubleshooting complications, data input, stripping the machines. You will also have the opportunity to learn, assessment of fistulas including cannulations.
Main Duties of the Job
- Providing independent holistic care to the patients.
- Assist and support the senior nurses in the daily smooth running of the unit.
- Cleaning of the equipment's like dialysis machines, bed, tables.
- Lining, priming and stripping of the haemodialysis machines.
- Monitoring patient observations and documentation of the findings.
- Report to the senior nurses of any deviation from normal.
- Supporting and mentoring health care assistants including appraisals.
- AVF assessments and cannulation.
- Connecting and disconnecting to the machine for AVF and AVG patients only.
- Prioritise patient care based on individual needs.
- Daily checking of the water plant systems document and report appropriately.
- Involved in patient education and support any ongoing research studies in the unit.
- Involved in assessment, planning and evaluation of care.
- Maintain effective communication within the team at all times.
- Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
- To ensure and promote the trust policies and protocols are adhered.
- To participate in team meetings as required by your team leader.
- To ensure your competency documents are signed and dated.

Working effectively as part of the immediate team and wider multidisciplinary team (MDT) through:
- Liaising effectively with all members of the MDT to ensure patients needs are met.
- Exercising leadership and taking the initiative where appropriate.
- Providing support and advice to ward/unit staff (especially junior staff) on clinical and administrative issues.
- Liaising with discharge coordinator / bed manager to ensure effective admission/discharge of patients.
- Keeping the ward/unit sister / charge nurse informed of significant changes and/or anticipated problems.

- Observing a general duty of care for the health, safety and well-being of yourself, work colleagues, visitors and patients within the hospital.

- Working with appropriate members of the teaching staff to ensure effective staff development (own and others).
- Participating in Trust and Divisional initiatives to develop nursing practice and support change.
