About hyperexponential (hx)

At hyperexponential, we’re building the AI-powered platform that enables the world’s most critical decisions in a £7 trillion industry—helping businesses risk to take, and how to price them. These are the decisions that shape real-world outcomes:

  • Whether rockets successfully launch into space
  • Whether autonomous vehicles make it to market
  • Whether communities recover after major storms

Until now, insurance has relied on outdated tools for billion-pound decisions. We’re changing that.

Our platform combines data, AI, and human expertise to accelerate decision-making for insurers, helping them:

  • Move faster
  • Act smarter
  • Take on more risk with confidence

Backed by a16z, Highland Europe, and Battery Ventures, we’re scaling globally and trusted by nearly 50 of the world’s largest insurers, with zero churn and billions in premiums flowing through hx.

What started as a single product in one market has evolved into a multi-product, multi-territory platform powering every stage of pricing and underwriting, with AI at its core:

  • The world’s first domain-specific AI peer programmer for insurance (think GitHub Copilot with a PhD in actuarial science)
  • Agentic workflows redefining how this industry operates

What makes hx different is the people who build it. Here, impact isn’t tied to title or tenure—it’s defined by discipline and the challenges you take on. Surrounded by peers who stretch you, you’ll do the best, hardest work of your life in a company built for longevity.

If that sounds like you, join us in building what comes next.

About the Platform Team

The Platform team at hx builds the foundation that enables engineering teams to ship secure, scalable applications at velocity. We’re evolving towards an AI-first platform, where:

  • Self-service infrastructure
  • Intelligent automation
  • Reusable components

…compound developer productivity and operational excellence.

This isn’t about maintaining the status quo—we’re reimagining how modern software delivery works.

About the Role: Staff Platform Engineer

You will own the technical direction of this evolution, defining:

  • Architecture and engineering standards
  • Coherence across teams
  • Alignment with long-term business outcomes

Your impact will extend beyond building capabilities—you’ll create the conditions for engineering teams to move faster, more safely, and more autonomously. This is an opportunity to shape how AI-first, self-service infrastructure is done at scale, influencing not just execution but how the entire company builds.

Check out our Engineering Candidate Hub for a behind-the-scenes look at the team you’d join!

What You’ll Be Doing

Technical Direction & Strategy

  • Establish a coherent 12–18 month technical roadmap, balancing trade-offs, milestones, and alignment with engineering leadership.
  • Ensure the roadmap is understood, trusted, and actively referenced by stakeholders.

Adoption & Impact

  • Platform capabilities are broadly adopted because they are:
    • Well-designed
    • Well-documented
    • Genuinely reduce friction
  • Measureably reduce Platform as a bottleneck for critical tasks like provisioning and deployment.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

Architecture & Standards

  • Define architectural patterns and standards enabling:
    • Autonomous, AI-augmented workflows across the organisation
    • Self-service ability for teams without requiring Platform’s constant involvement
  • Embed security, reliability, and operational excellence standards as the default path, not mandates with gatekeeping.
  • Reduce misconfigurations, security exceptions, and incidents across the tech stack.

Technical Leadership & Influence

  • Elevate other engineers by shaping their architectural instincts, trade-offs, and platform thinking.
  • Be sought out as a technical authority within the company.
  • Mentor senior engineers through challenging problems, constructive feedback, and deliberate exposure.

What You’ll Need to Have Done

Technical Vision & Execution

  • Defined the architecture, standards, and patterns for platform domains over multi-quarter horizons, with high-judgement calls on:
    • Build vs. buy
    • Depth vs. breadth
    • Short-term pragmatism vs. long-term coherence
  • Brought the organisation along on these decisions.

Stakeholder Navigation & Decision-Making

  • Navigated disagreement across senior engineers, architects, and stakeholders to reach durable technical decisions.
  • Maintained firm technical positions under pressure, updated as needed, and ensured decisions stick after being made.

Outcome Ownership & Enablement

  • Been accountable for cross-team outcomes you didn’t deliver personally.
  • Designed systems, standards, and enablement approaches that multiply the effectiveness of others—rather than being the primary contributor.

AI & Automation Integration

  • Defined how AI and automation are embedded at the architectural level—not just experimenting with tools, but establishing patterns for AI-augmented workflows as the norm.

Adoption & Internal Customer Focus

  • Understood adoption dynamics, internal needs, and systemic barriers to self-service.
  • Shaped the roadmap based on feedback, usage data, and friction analysis, ensuring the platform earns adoption—not just mandates it.

Risk Mitigation & Prioritisation

  • Identified architectural, security, and operational risks before they escalated.
  • Influenced how reliability, security, and cost-efficiency are prioritised across engineering.

Alignment with Business Outcomes

  • Connected platform strategy to business outcomes with credible representation.
  • Translated engineering constraints into business language and used commercial context to sharpen priorities.

Team Development & Culture

  • Actively developed senior engineers via:
    • Technical challenge
    • Honest feedback
    • Deliberate exposure to complex problems
  • Recognised as someone who raises team capability—not just code quality.
  • Modelled engineering culture the organisation aspires to.

What You’ll Not Thrive At (If...)

  • You prefer executing predefined tasks over ownership of ambiguous problems requiring exploration, experimentation, and iteration.
  • You view platform engineering as isolated infrastructure rather than a product with internal customers whose adoption drives success.
  • You’re uncomfortable with rapid change and continuous improvement, preferring stability and traditional patterns over evolving practices.

If you read our Culture Document and feel neutral instead of energised, hx may not be the place to do your best work—we need commitment, conviction, and excitement.
