Job Title: Staff Software Developer
Location: Cambridge (Hybrid, 3 days onsite)
Job Type: Permanent, full-time
Position Overview:
An experienced Staff Software Developer with strong C and Python expertise, responsible for leading the design and delivery of complex features within a major cryptographic security product.
The role provides technical leadership from initial feature analysis through design, implementation, testing, and release. Working across embedded software, platform components, client-side tools, and APIs, it establishes clear technical direction, drives cross-functional collaboration, and ensures solutions are secure, maintainable, and aligned with the product architecture.
This is a hands-on technical leadership position requiring strong software engineering and design skills, sound technical judgement, and the ability to influence, mentor, and guide engineers across multiple disciplines.
Responsibilities:
- Lead complex features from initial analysis and technical design through breakdown, estimation, implementation, validation, and release.
- Translate high-level or evolving requirements into a clear technical approach for the team setting priorities of tasks.
- Design, develop, test, review, and maintain high-quality software across relevant areas of the product.
- Coach and mentor engineers, including supporting Senior Software Developers in developing their technical leadership and feature ownership.
- Support architecture team in design of system-level architecture (availability, latency, cost, data models). Use cross-domain knowledge to anticipate scale and evolution over time.

Qualifications:
Basic Qualifications:
- A degree, equivalent qualification, or equivalent practical experience in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related discipline.
- Strong software development expertise in C, Python, or comparable systems-level technologies, with the ability to work effectively within an established C and Python codebase.
- Significant experience designing and delivering complex, multi-component software systems.
- Experience working across multiple components or layers of a software system, such as embedded software, device drivers, platform components, client-side tools, or APIs.
- Experience providing technical leadership for complex features or substantial software initiatives.
- Practical experience with CI/CD and disciplined, automated testing practices.
- Experience mentoring engineers and influencing technical decisions across teams or disciplines.
Bonus Qualifications:
- Experience working within a regulated industry or with software certification, assurance, or compliance requirements.
- Working knowledge of open-source licensing, software supply-chain considerations and contributions to, or practical use of, open-source software projects and ecosystems.
- Knowledge of cryptographic principles, secure software development, or threat modelling.
- Exposure to Agile development methodologies and scaled product-development environments.
