Job Title
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Staff Software Engineer based in United Kingdom.
About the Role
Join a fully remote engineering organization where your influence extends across teams, systems, and engineering practices.
As a Staff Engineer, you will remain hands-on while leading major architectural initiatives and helping engineers make better technical decisions.
You will shape the evolution of a distributed rendering platform, with a strong focus on simplicity, scalability, reliability, and testability.
Your expertise will help teams move faster and more safely by removing systemic bottlenecks and establishing effective technical patterns and practices.
You will work closely with engineering, product, and leadership teams to connect technical investments with broader business goals.
Beyond writing code, you will coach engineers, build shared context, and raise the standard of engineering excellence across the organization.
This role is ideal for a technically strong, systems-oriented leader who enjoys solving complex problems while empowering others to succeed.
Accountabilities
- Contribute directly to core systems while setting high standards for code quality, testing, architecture, and software design.
- Lead cross-team architectural initiatives that simplify systems and improve scalability, reliability, performance, and testability.
- Design elegant solutions to complex technical challenges involving distributed systems and large-scale web rendering.
- Identify technical risks, systemic bottlenecks, and recurring challenges, then establish effective solutions and engineering defaults that enable teams to work efficiently.
- Coach and mentor engineers at different levels through pairing, design reviews, technical guidance, and hands-on support in engineering practices.
- Promote sustainable engineering practices such as test-driven development, pair programming, continuous integration, and continuous delivery.
- Partner with product and leadership teams to balance immediate delivery needs with long-term technical health and maintainability.
- Improve engineering tooling, automation, workflows, and shared practices to increase effectiveness across teams.
- Facilitate technical discussions and create shared context around architectural decisions, trade-offs, and strategic priorities.
- Review code and provide thoughtful, actionable feedback that helps engineers continuously improve.
- Establish patterns, guardrails, and good technical defaults that increase consistency and enable teams to move with confidence.
- Lead by example through ownership, collaboration, technical excellence, and a continuous drive to improve systems and ways of working.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

- Strong familiarity with AWS and cloud-native infrastructure.
- Excellent understanding of system design, distributed architectures, performance, reliability, scalability, and software quality.
- Strong systems-thinking ability, with the capacity to connect product objectives, technical architecture, engineering practices, and organizational needs.
- Demonstrated ability to balance short-term delivery priorities with long-term maintainability and technical sustainability.
- Experience coaching and mentoring engineers through context, guidance, collaboration, and example rather than authority or gatekeeping.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Strong ownership, initiative, and problem-solving skills, combined with a consistent drive to improve systems, teams, and processes.
- Comfortable working in a distributed, remote-first environment with a high degree of autonomy and trust.
- Experience with SEO, web performance, or large-scale rendering infrastructure is a plus, but curiosity, adaptability, and strong engineering fundamentals are valued more highly than specific industry experience.
