Enterprise Technology Services
The Enterprise Technology Services organization partners with every part of the American Express business to power the company’s growth and innovation with trust and efficiency, and drive competitive differentiation with speed. We support the delivery and operations of technology, digital, and data capabilities, platforms, and services globally. Specifically, our team is responsible for the company’s technology engineering, architecture, and infrastructure, providing 24x7 support to ensure an uninterrupted, high-quality experience for customers and colleagues. We also provide product management for core enterprise platforms, and lead technology risk and information security, enterprise data governance and platforms, digital product and design, and enterprise AI platforms on behalf of the company.
Corporate Solutions (GCST) serves many of the world's largest and most recognisable organisations, including industry leaders across a diverse range of sectors. We help clients navigate complex business challenges through innovative payment solutions, trusted partnerships, and exceptional service delivered at a global scale, enabling them to manage and optimise their business operations around the world.
As an engineering leader within Corporate Solutions, you will help define the technology strategy and engineering direction for platforms that support some of the world's largest organisations. Working across business and technology teams, you will drive innovation, solve complex challenges at scale, and develop the next generation of engineering talent, while delivering secure, resilient, and high-performing solutions that power critical client experiences globally.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Software Development
- Provide technical leadership for the design, development and delivery of scalable, secure and resilient software solutions.
- Drive architecture, engineering standards and technology strategy across multiple teams and platforms.
- Act as a hands-on technical leader, contributing to design reviews, code reviews, prototyping and complex problem solving.
- Design and implement distributed systems, APIs, event-driven architectures and cloud-native solutions capable of operating at enterprise scale.
- Champion modern engineering practices, including CI/CD, automated testing, observability, reliability engineering and operational excellence.
- Evaluate emerging technologies, industry trends and open-source capabilities, identifying opportunities to improve engineering effectiveness and business outcomes.
- Partner with product, architecture, security and platform teams to translate business objectives into technology solutions.
- Lead root cause analysis of critical production issues and drive improvements that enhance system reliability, performance and scalability.
- Influence technical direction across organisational boundaries and help establish reusable patterns, frameworks and engineering best practices.
- Accelerate innovation by identifying technical barriers and driving adoption of modern platforms, tooling and development approaches.

Leadership
- Provide technical mentorship and coaching to engineers at all levels, fostering a culture of continuous learning and engineering excellence.
- Lead through influence, building alignment and consensus across engineering, product and business stakeholders.
- Set high standards for engineering quality, operational ownership and technical decision-making.
- Guide teams through complex technical challenges, helping them balance short-term delivery needs with long-term platform health.
- Communicate technical strategy, risks, trade-offs and recommendations clearly to senior leadership and non-technical audiences.
- Promote a culture of innovation, collaboration, accountability and customer-focused delivery.
- Support talent development through mentoring, knowledge sharing and creating opportunities for technical growth.
- Act as a trusted technical adviser, helping shape strategic technology decisions across the organisation.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
- At least 8 years' experience designing, building and operating large-scale software systems in a complex enterprise environment.
- Deep expertise in one or more modern programming languages and technology stacks.
- Proven experience designing distributed systems, microservices, APIs and event-driven architectures.
- Strong understanding of cloud platforms, containerisation, infrastructure automation and modern software delivery practices.
- Recent experience applying relevant AI tools and integrating AI or machine learning models into software products to improve user experience, engineering productivity, or business outcomes.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines, source control, automated testing and engineering productivity tooling.
- Strong knowledge of data platforms, relational and NoSQL databases, and system integration patterns.
- Demonstrated ability to influence technical direction across multiple teams without direct authority.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Proven track record of mentoring engineers and developing technical capability within an organisation.
- Curiosity and passion for technology, continuous learning and innovation.
