About the Role
I am working with a leading global IoT client that is based in the UK, looking to hire a Staff Software Engineer for a key role in modernising a large, mission-critical data platform. The role offers the right person, the opportunity to take technical ownership of this exciting project, working with a local and remote-based team. My client is located in both London, UK & Poland and you can be situated in either country with hybrid working. This is a permanent role and unable to offer sponsorship, paying up to £95,000.
Responsibilities
As the Staff Software Engineer in this position, you will be responsible for the modernisation of this critical platform, ensuring delivery is on time, without any disturbance to the current performance, data is safe from external cyber threats and reporting into the Engineering Manager, but also working alongside Product, Data, Architects and Software Engineering teams. You can also expect to manage technical debt, tech strategy, lead projects and guide, mentor and develop your junior colleagues.

Requirements
- Degree or Masters in Software, Computer Science, Data or similar
- 10+ years of Industry Experience
- 2+ years of proven experience in leading full lifecycle projects (not just as an IC)
- Expertise with modern: Node.js / Nest.js / TypeScript and/or PHP 8.x
- Strong background in distributed systems and event-driven / asynchronous processing (e.g. RabbitMQ, Kafka, SQS)
- Strong experience in PostgreSQL (query design, indexing, performance tuning)
- Experience owning CI/CD pipelines and release strategy
- Hands-on exposure to AI-assisted development (e.g. Cursor, Claude Code, GitHub Copilot or similar)
- Familiarity with AWS-based platforms (ECS, S3, Parameter Store, SES)
- Strong communication and stakeholder skills to both technical and non-technical senior leadership
- Experience mentoring engineers and developing their skills/career

Bonus
- Experience leading a PHP → TypeScript / Node transition (or equivalent cross-language modernisation)
- Strong understanding of TypeScript at an architectural level
- Background in billing, financial or metering/rating domains
- Exposure to projects involving LLMs or Machine Learning in a production context
