Staff Software Engineer
📍 London | Hybrid – 3 days per week
đź’¸ Salary up to ÂŁ170k
A growing technology business is looking for a Staff Software Engineer to help shape the next stage of its engineering platform.
This is a hands-on technical leadership role for someone who enjoys solving difficult engineering problems, influencing technical direction and helping experienced engineers do their best work.
You’ll have the opportunity to work across a broad technical landscape, taking ownership of significant projects and helping turn ideas into reliable, production-ready software.
The role
- Lead and support a small team of experienced engineers while remaining hands-on
- Take ownership of major technical initiatives from initial design through to delivery
- Help shape architecture and technical direction across the platform
- Work closely with Product, Design and Engineering teams to turn requirements into practical solutions
- Improve the reliability, scalability and maintainability of existing systems
- Introduce and develop engineering practices that improve quality and delivery
- Mentor senior engineers and contribute to the wider engineering community
- Identify opportunities to improve products and internal development through automation and emerging technology
- Make considered technical decisions in an environment where there is plenty of room to influence how things are built

Requirements:

- Significant commercial software engineering experience
- A strong track record of designing and delivering complex software
- Experience working with scalable backend systems
- Strong experience with a modern backend programming language
- Experience working across architecture, performance and reliability
- Comfortable remaining hands-on while providing technical leadership
- Experience leading projects or mentoring experienced engineers
- Able to take ownership of substantial pieces of work with limited direction
- Strong engineering fundamentals and an interest in building things properly
- Comfortable working across technical and product discussions
- A pragmatic approach to balancing engineering quality with business requirements
- Curiosity around AI, automation and emerging technologies
