Staff Software Engineer – ClickHouse Committer
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Staff Software Engineer – ClickHouse Committer based in United Kingdom.
This is a fully remote EMEA opportunity focused on advanced database engineering and real-time analytical workloads.
You will contribute directly to the evolution of analytics technologies, with a particular focus on ClickHouse and its integration with the PostgreSQL ecosystem.
The role combines systems programming, database internals, performance engineering, troubleshooting, and open-source development.
You will have significant technical ownership, contributing upstream while helping shape production-grade analytics products and tools.
The position involves close collaboration with experienced engineers through code reviews, testing, CI/CD, and feature development.
You will work on technically demanding challenges involving distributed systems, query processing, database performance, and reliability.
This role is particularly suited to an experienced engineer who is passionate about open-source databases and deep systems-level engineering.
Accountabilities
- Design, develop, and maintain database features and tooling, with a particular focus on ClickHouse and real-time analytical workloads.
- Contribute to analytics products and integrations across the broader PostgreSQL ecosystem, including database extensions, accelerators, migration tooling, monitoring capabilities, and performance optimizations.
- Implement new functionality while maintaining high standards for software stability, reliability, scalability, and maintainability.
- Review and refine code contributions from other engineers, providing constructive technical feedback and helping maintain strong engineering standards.
- Write, maintain, and expand regression tests covering bug fixes, new functionality, and critical database behavior.
- Investigate and resolve complex database, networking, and software-related issues.
- Identify performance bottlenecks and implement optimizations for analytical database workloads.
- Work with CI/CD pipelines to support reliable integration, testing, and deployment processes.
- Contribute upstream to the ClickHouse open-source project and participate in the wider open-source database ecosystem.
- Collaborate with engineering colleagues on technical design, implementation, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement.

Requirements
- 5+ years of experience developing database internals, preferably with PostgreSQL or comparable database technologies.
- Demonstrated upstream contributions or commits to the ClickHouse open-source project.
- Deep expertise in at least one systems programming language, such as C, C++, Rust, or Go.
- Strong understanding of database principles, algorithms, data structures, and operating system internals.
- Experience working with distributed query optimizers, such as Orca or comparable technologies.
- Proven experience optimizing the performance of analytical database systems.
- Strong Linux development and debugging skills.
- Excellent problem-solving abilities, particularly when diagnosing complex database and systems issues.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with technical peers.
- Experience with analytical libraries or databases such as Spark, DataFusion, or DuckDB is a plus.
- Experience with massively parallel processing (MPP) systems such as Greenplum is a plus.
- Solid knowledge of PostgreSQL internals is an advantage.
- Familiarity with machine learning libraries and techniques is beneficial.
- Knowledge of GitHub Actions and CI/CD workflows is a plus.
- Contributions to other open-source database projects are an advantage.
- Comfortable working independently in a fully distributed, remote engineering environment.
