Referment

Referment is working with a well-known UK financial comparison brand whose free online service lets consumers compare products from credit cards to savings accounts, loans to travel money, part of a larger group of comparison and mortgage brands. The Financial Services team builds the web apps, back office systems and tooling that power financial product comparison, integrate partner APIs, track sales, optimise marketing and drive reporting, and is growing its offering to small and medium businesses. The stack is TypeScript, React and Node.js (Bun where it fits), running on Kubernetes in AWS.

The Role

As Staff Software Engineer, you will set the technical direction for Financial Services and raise the standard the team holds itself to. Most of your day lands on the front end, but you own quality end to end: infrastructure, databases, pipelines, servers, CDNs, responsive accessible React components aligned to the design system, real-time metrics and alerting. You will turn commercial and customer problems into working software, put a value on the problems worth solving first, and make the engineers around you better, measured by what the team ships rather than what you ship alone. You will run code reviews, give and take direct feedback without ego, and keep applications tested, secure and maintainable. AI fluency is a core requirement: the team already runs AI inside live workflows, and you will find concrete uses for AI that move a metric, then help other teams adopt what actually works.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

What We're Looking For

  • Strong TypeScript, and deep Node.js ecosystem knowledge (node, npm, yarn), including bundling and dependency management (Bun a plus)
  • Proficiency with AI tooling, including shipping code via CLI or editor-based LLM agents and using MCP servers
  • A solid grasp of the React paradigm: one-way data binding, declarative programming, rules of hooks, common anti-patterns
  • Practical software engineering principles and complexity management (separation of concerns, design patterns, domain-driven design) and a bias towards clean, simple code
  • Familiarity with container-based cloud-native applications and patterns such as REST APIs, message passing, scaling and load balancing, plus awareness of web security concerns (SQL injection, XSS, CORS, cookies, authentication and authorisation)

This role is hybrid: two days a week (Wednesdays and Thursdays) in the London office.

This could suit a senior full-stack engineer who wants real influence over a team's technical direction and enjoys raising the bar across a product area, not just shipping their own work.
