Staff Software Engineer – Identity and Access, Identity Squads
The Identity squad at Grafana Labs creates the authentication layer ensuring seamless user sign-in security for millions. An exciting opportunity to redefine and architect Grafana’s authentication infrastructure at scale.
The Opportunity
Grafana Labs, the company driving the open observability cloud, is seeking a senior leader to revolutionise authentication at scale within the Identity and Access team. You’ll define the future of Grafana’s authentication, balancing low-latency performance with cutting-edge protocols like MCP OAuth 2.1, OIDC, SAML, and LDAP—directly impacting millions of users daily.
As part of a high-growth, distributed team, you’ll oversee critical edge authentication architecture, lead multi-quarter initiatives, and merge technology and engineering with cross-functional stakeholder collaboration.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership (25%)
- Define and own the technical architecture for Identity squad authentication systems, including strategic edge authentication design.
- Lead multi-quarter, multi-team initiatives in Grafana’s high-velocity user authentication paths (with 55% backend Go development focus).
- Serve as the technical authority for identity protocols, guiding implementation across the organisation.
- Drive collaboration on authentication standards, patterns, and best practices to reduce technical debt.
Mentorship (15%)
- Mentor mid-to-senior engineers, fostering professional growth and architectural best practices.
- Elevate the engineering culture through osmosis of complex technical problem-solving.

Hands-On Development & Reliability (20%)
- Participate in private and public cloud operations, ensuring robustness of authentication systems.
- Optimise performance at sub-millisecond latency for critical, high-volume systems.
Community & Speakership (5%)
- Act as a thought leader in the identity sector, engaging with meetups, conferences, and open-source contributions.
Requirements
A career-defining opportunity awaits someone with obsession-level depth in:
- Go (Golang) and distributed systems design, with a 360° track record of end-to-end development for highly-scalable services (low-latency, multi-tenant).
- Large-scale initiative leadership: Delivery of transformational projects across multiple teams.
- Strong SLO/SLI understanding—designing systems that harmonise reliability, security, and product velocity.
- Mentorship skills: Developing engineers at the Staff level.
- Expert comprehension of modern authentication protocols: OIDC, OAuth (including 2.1), SAML, LDAP, SCIM, and threat modelling.
- Remote-first mindset: Crisp written communication and proactive collaboration.
Bonus experience with:
- Kubernetes or cloud-native tools.
- TypeScript/React integration patterns.
- OpenFGA or KiFederate IDP experience.
- Contributions to open-source projects, or security-sensitive environments.
- Background with Grafana/Observability tooling.

Compensation & Perks
For UK-based candidates, base compensation spans £100,000–£124,000 (factors ensure custom alignment). Benefits include:
