About The Role

Ocho is seeking a Senior Staff Software Engineer to join its Belfast office, offering a flexible hybrid work model. As a key member of the Portal Reports and Insights application team, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining distributed, fault-tolerant systems that support the company's global reporting infrastructure. These systems process nearly 10,000 automated reports weekly, serving a diverse client base across multiple continents. You will take ownership of complex technical initiatives, providing architectural guidance and leading end-to-end delivery. This role offers a unique opportunity to influence system architecture at a large scale, mentor engineering talent, and contribute to a product used by some of the world's leading retail brands.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess over 7 years of experience in building and supporting scalable, distributed systems, with a strong background in open-source tools. Proficiency in object-oriented programming languages such as Java and C++, along with scripting languages like Python or Ruby, is essential. Experience with complex SQL queries, particularly with PostgreSQL, is required. Familiarity with API frameworks such as Spring Boot and cloud platforms, especially AWS, is highly desirable. Prior leadership or mentoring experience is necessary to ensure effective guidance within the team. Additional skills in AWS services like CloudFormation, EMR, S3, EC2, and CloudTrail, as well as data visualization tools such as D3.js, Tableau, or Looker, are considered advantageous. A proactive attitude towards technical innovation and team collaboration is vital for success in this role.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement distributed, fault-tolerant reporting and insights systems that support global clients.
  • Lead software initiatives from initial concept through to successful delivery, ensuring high-quality standards.
  • Establish and promote engineering best practices across the team to foster a culture of excellence and continuous improvement.
  • Develop analytical dashboards and data visualizations used directly by clients, enhancing their decision-making capabilities.
  • Mentor and support engineers, promoting technical growth and knowledge sharing within the team.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to maintain system performance, reliability, and scalability at a global level.
  • Stay updated with emerging technologies and industry trends to continually enhance system architecture and functionality.
