From a day-to-day perspective: Statisticians and programmers have a critical role to play in support of medical research and drug development. In your day-to-day tasks, you will identify trends, troubleshoot issues, and apply logical reasoning to interpret scientific data or clarify what the data signify about patient experiences in clinical trials. Quick thinking and meticulous attention to detail are crucial to guarantee patient safety, especially when operating under tight deadlines.
Qualification Requirements
To qualify for this role, you must be in your 2nd year of a BSc in Mathematics or Statistics. Students enrolled in other courses with a substantial statistical focus will also be considered.

- £26,000 per annum

- UCB offers hybrid working. 2 days onsite minimum
Working Hours
- Monday to Friday, 09:00am – 17:30pm 1 hour unpaid lunch break.
- Flexible hours / working- 10:00am – 15:30pm core working hours and making up the remaining time either side of these hours

Job Description
Clinical trials generate a large volume of data and it’s the statistician’s role to help interpret this data to determine if the drug is safe and effective for patients. A large part of the job is about visualising data through graphs and tables; this takes innovative thinking as no two studies are ever the same.
Statisticians have a critical role to play in support of medical research. A poorly designed trial or inadequate data will not enable a team to make an informed decision about the progression of a drug, so it is implicit to have statisticians at every stage of development so decisions can be made with confidence.
The role of the Statistical Programmer is instrumental in transforming this information to assess the safety and efficacy of new medicines. The job focuses on data visualisation, employing graphs and tables to present findings. The need for creative solutions is paramount, as each study is unique in its structure and requirements.
In the medical field, programmers are more than just data manipulators. They construct comprehensive data-driven narratives concerning patient profiles or novel medicines. Quality visualisation transforms intricate data into compelling, straightforward messages. Our programmers effectively narrate the stories embedded in the data using advanced graphics and interactive tools.
Job Responsibilities
In your day-to-day tasks, you’ll be asked to spot patterns, problem solving and apply logic to the data to explain what is happening to the patients in a clinical trial. Sometimes tasks have very tight timelines as we want to ensure our patients in clinics are safe; so quick thinking combined with attention to detail are key skills. Both formal and informal training in statistics and programming will be available; prior programming experience is not a prerequisite, and you'll have the chance to participate in relevant scientific seminars.
