Industrial Placement Students: 2027-2028

Contract Duration: 12-month

Expected Start Date: 26/06/2027

We are offering industrial placement roles for Statistician & Data Analysts in Clinical Trials Placements:

  • Statistician in Biostatistics based in Cambridge/Uxbridge, UK
  • Statistician in the Data Science Team based in Cambridge/Uxbridge, UK
  • Data Analyst based in Uxbridge, UK

Statistician in Biostatistics – Cambridge/ Uxbridge, UK

Biostatisticians are involved in every stage of a clinical trial, including trial design, management and monitoring of ongoing trials, data analysis and interpretation, trial reporting, and maintaining global standards for data collected during clinical trials. Amgen currently has vacancies in their Cambridge and Uxbridge offices for up to two placement students in the Biostatistics department.

Students working in Biostatistics will gain experience in:

  • SAS/R programming in the pharmaceutical industry (including extensive training).
  • Manipulating, summarising, reporting and interpreting clinical trial data.
  • Researching and applying statistical models to trial data.

Role Degree requirement: Programming, mathematics, statistics, or a related discipline


Statistician in Data Science – Cambridge/ Uxbridge, UK

The Data Science team works with different study teams throughout the study design and study conduct phase. They use statistical and machine learning techniques to help optimise study designs and analyse study operational data to increase efficiency of the study. The multi-disciplinary team is made up of Data and Software Engineers and Data Scientists, who work closely together, exploiting the variety of data available both within the company and through industry data sharing initiatives.

A Mathematician/Statistician working in Data Science will gain experience in:

  • Advanced mathematical/statistical models for designing and forecasting clinical trials.
  • Deeper knowledge of programming languages (primary R and potentially Python) and writing software to apply the developed models to the analysis of real trials.
  • Monte Carlo techniques for simulating various characteristics of clinical trials.
  • Working with data scientists to learn about various modern directions in Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, etc. and share knowledge.

Data Analyst - Uxbridge, UK

This is an exciting opportunity to join Amgen and gain exposure in the growing field of Observational Research within the Centre for Observational Research (CfOR). In this role you will work with epidemiologists to analyse Real-World Data (RWD) to generate evidence that informs the safety, effectiveness and value of Amgen’s medicines.

CfOR designs, conducts, analyses, interprets and publishes Observational Research that complements clinical trial data and supports decision-making across the product lifecycle.

Key placement learnings:

  • Use platforms such as Databricks to work with big data by manipulating and analysing complex RWD sources.
  • Deliver impactful projects in R, SAS and SQL.
  • Build custom tools such as R packages, Shiny apps, SAS macros, and Python scripts to improve the efficiency, quality, and innovation of the programming team’s work.

A key component of CfOR’s work is the use of RWD, such as claims databases and electronic health records from GPs and hospitals, for the following:

  • Understand disease burden (incidence/prevalence) and treatment patterns.
  • Evaluate the safety and effectiveness of interventions in diverse populations.
  • Support regulatory submissions.
  • Inform clinical trial design and post-marketing surveillance.

Role Degree requirement: Mathematics. Other degrees (e.g. computer science) will be considered if accompanied by experience/interest in data-related programming.


Working arrangements

We have 2 offices, one in Cambridge and one in Uxbridge, with the location of the position being dependent on the department that you are applying for. Amgen offers a hybrid working model whereby there is the opportunity to work from home and/or work from the office. Please note that your manager may also be either on-site or working remotely. We encourage students to work from the office where possible to build connections with colleagues both within their department and from other departments.


Requirements

All applicants should have:

  • Excellent exam and course work grades from the first year of their degree (or higher qualification) in the stated discipline per role.
  • Good communication and organisational skills and a self-motivated, proactive approach to work.
  • An ability to work in teams and remain flexible to changing priorities.
  • A genuine interest in the healthcare/pharmaceutical industry and a willingness to learn new areas.
  • Excellent data analytical skills.
  • For Statistics and programming roles: a strong understanding of statistics and/or programming and their application & ideally, experience in at least one programming language.

The successful student will gain

  • Experience of working in a busy department within the pharmaceutical industry.
  • An understanding of the drug development process.
  • Insight into other departments within Amgen and how they interact.
  • Experience of working in teams with other Statisticians, Programmers, Epidemiologists and Analysts.
  • Opportunities to build a strong professional network and collaborate with fellow students.
  • Experience with hybrid working, gaining flexibility and developing skills in both remote and in-office environments.
