Steel Estimator

Denton Powell is looking for an experienced and commercially minded Steel Estimator to join our team. This is a key role within the business, responsible for reviewing enquiries, preparing accurate and competitive estimates, developing rates and cost plans, and producing professional quotations for our customers. The successful candidate will ideally have experience within structural steel, architectural steel, fabrication, construction, or a closely related engineering environment. You will combine technical understanding with strong commercial awareness, ensuring that projects are priced accurately while identifying risks, opportunities, and potential cost savings.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review incoming enquiries, drawings, specifications, scopes of work and tender information.
  • Prepare detailed and accurate estimates for structural and/or architectural steelwork and associated fabrication and installation activities.
  • Produce quotations and cost plans for customers, including labour, materials, plant, subcontract, transport and other project costs.
  • Develop, maintain and review estimating rates for materials, labour, fabrication, installation and associated costs.
  • Carry out quantity take-offs from drawings, models, schedules and specifications.
  • Assess steel tonnage, plate, sections, fittings, connections and other fabricated components as required.
  • Obtain and compare supplier and subcontractor quotations.
  • Identify exclusions, assumptions, qualifications, risks and potential variations at tender stage.
  • Work closely with the directors, engineers, draughting team, production and site teams.
  • Assist with project handover from estimating into procurement, production and delivery.
  • Monitor completed and live projects against original estimates to improve future estimating accuracy.
  • Maintain clear estimating records and contribute to improving Denton Powell's estimating and commercial systems.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with customers, suppliers and subcontractors.

Commercial / Quantity Surveying Responsibilities

  • Prepare and review project cost plans and budgets.
  • Track estimated costs against actual costs and identify variances.
  • Assist with pricing variations, additional works and changes to scope.
  • Review subcontract and supplier costs where appropriate.
  • Support the directors with commercial reporting and project cost information.
  • Help identify opportunities to improve margins, control costs and reduce commercial risk.

What We Are Looking For

  • Previous estimating experience within structural steel, architectural steel, fabrication, construction, engineering or a related industry.
  • Strong ability to read and understand structural and/or architectural drawings, specifications and scopes of work.
  • Good understanding of steelwork materials, fabrication processes and installation requirements.
  • Strong numerical and commercial skills, with excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to develop and interrogate rates and produce reliable cost plans.
  • Confident using Microsoft Excel and estimating / commercial software.
  • Ability to work independently while communicating effectively with directors and the wider team.
  • A commercially aware approach, with the confidence to challenge costs, assumptions and tender information when required.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple tenders and deadlines.

Desirable Experience

  • Experience estimating structural and/or architectural steelwork projects.
  • Quantity surveying or commercial management experience within construction or engineering.
  • Experience with fabrication and installation costings.
  • Understanding of procurement, subcontractor pricing and supplier negotiations.
  • Experience working from structural or architectural drawings and connection details.
  • Experience with estimating, ERP, project-management or construction software.
