• 18 years old+: Monday to Friday, 07:30 to 17:30. 45-hours, not including up to an hour break each day. 40 hours a week

What you'll do at work

As an Apprentice Steel Fixer, you will learn to assemble and erect the steel components required to strengthen reinforced concrete structures, such as bridges, culverts, railway stations, power stations, etc.

• Setting out the work area, following engineering plans
• Using hand and power tools to cut and bend bars or mesh
• Tying steel reinforcement bars (rebars) to build cages

Typically, you will work within a larger team on construction projects, and, in the fullness of time, you will be able to interpret contract information, drawings and specifications, in order to assemble and install the components correctly.

• Protect others within the working vicinity through the use of barriers, signs, and bar protectors.
• Comply with industry regulations, standards, and guidance.
• Prepare and maintain a safe working area.
• Move, lift and handle materials.
• Work at height and use access and fall protection equipment.
• Interpret information from drawings and specifications.
• Plan order of works and carry out pre-work checks.
• Use and store hand tools and power tools.
• Apply processes and techniques to install a range of in-situ steel reinforcing structures, for example, columns, walls, pile caps and slabs.
• Measure and mark out reinforcing steel.
• Cut and bend reinforcing steel.
• Produce and install supports, for example, L bars, U bars, splay bars and chairs.
• Join and tie reinforcing steel.
• Use temporary construction bars.
• Install bracing within steel reinforcement.
• Communicate verbally with colleagues or customers using industry terminology.
• Complete post build checks.
• Follow equity, diversity and inclusion legislative guidance and principles.
• Apply ethical principles.
• Follow environmental and sustainability regulations, standards, and guidance. Segregate resources for reuse, recycling and disposal.
• Use processes and techniques to build reinforcing steel assembly with a: step, penetration or upstand feature.
