Shift Pattern

  • Typical hours: Tuesday to Friday 11am-11pm
  • Occasional overtime as required to meet customer demand.

Job Purpose

The Steel Handler is responsible for the safe and efficient handling, movement, and storage of steel products within our yard and warehouse operations. This role ensures materials are accurately prepared and delivered to meet customer requirements while maintaining the highest standards of health, safety, and operational efficiency.

Duties and Responsibilities

Material Handling

  • Load, unload, and move steel using overhead cranes, forklifts, and other material-handling equipment
  • Follow all safety protocols during material handling

Order Picking & Preparation

  • Accurately select and prepare steel sections, plates, and profiles according to customer orders and cutting lists
  • Inspect materials for damage, correct identification, and conformance to order specifications

Storage & Organisation

  • Ensure stock is stored safely and logically within designated areas
  • Maintain yard and warehouse tidiness and organisation

Equipment Checks & Maintenance

  • Conduct pre-use checks on cranes, forklifts, and lifting gear
  • Report defects or maintenance issues promptly

Safety Compliance

  • Follow all company safety policies and procedures, including PPE usage, load securing, and manual handling best practices
  • Promote a culture of safety within the warehouse and yard

Documentation & Reporting

  • Complete delivery notes, stock movement forms, and system entries accurately
  • Support administrative tasks related to materials handling and dispatch

Teamwork & Coordination

  • Work closely with drivers, machine operators, and office staff to ensure smooth workflow and timely dispatch of orders
  • Assist in continuous improvement initiatives within the warehouse and yard

Housekeeping & Quality Control

  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organised working environment in accordance with company standards

Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required

Essential

  • Previous experience handling steel or heavy materials in an industrial, warehouse, or fabrication environment
  • Competent in operating overhead cranes and/or counterbalance forklifts (certification desirable)
  • Strong awareness of health and safety procedures
  • Ability to read and interpret basic job sheets
  • Physically fit and capable of manual work in a busy yard environment
  • Reliable, punctual, and safety-conscious

Desirable

  • Experience in a steel stockholding or fabrication company
  • Slinger/Signaller training or experience working with lifting accessories
