Steel Machinist Operator

North Shields
£29,735 per annum (£14.26 per hour)
Monday - Friday 7am - 3:30pm

At Marshalls plc, we believe building tomorrow's world starts with what we can create together today. Since the 1890s, we've grown from a Yorkshire stone business into a leading UK manufacturer of building, roofing and landscaping solutions. Built on generations of expertise, we're known for quality, innovation and sustainability, helping our customers bring their vision to life and create places that work today and last for generations. Together, we're building tomorrow's world.

Marshalls Landscaping delivers innovative hard landscaping solutions for projects across the UK, from city centre transformations and public realm schemes to housing developments and community spaces. Combining outstanding design, quality and sustainability, our market-leading range of paving, kerbs, edgings and street furniture helps create places where people live, work and connect.

We're now recruiting for a Steel Machinist Operator, (known within Marshalls as a Skilled Production Team Member), to join our busy manufacturing department at our North Shields site.

What's the mission?

In this hands-on role, you’ll set up and operate a range of workshop machinery to produce high-quality metal components to the required specifications. This will include working with manual lathes and milling machines, as well as carrying out drilling, tapping and reaming operations. You’ll also use metal bending and rolling equipment, abrasive wheels, grinders, and other workshop machinery, selecting the appropriate tooling, cutting speeds and feeds for different materials and tasks. You’ll be confident reading and interpreting engineering drawings, dimensions and tolerances, and using precision measuring equipment such as verniers, micrometres, and gauges to ensure accuracy.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
