About the role and opportunity
This is the role that keeps our brand new concept store in Central London running day to day, alongside a Store Manager - a small but ambitious hybrid of shop, Conversation Café and cultural venue. The Supervisor will act as a senior presence on the sales floor during the week and lead our part-time staff. It's a role for someone who's happy running the show solo and equally happy supporting a team the rest of the time. The focus of the role will be to make sure every visitor - whether they've come for a book or a conversation, leaves having had a genuinely good experience.

- Responsibility for store performance, sales targets and customer experience, in the absence of the Store Manager
- Ensure every visitor interaction reflects TSOL's values and tone
- First point of contact for any operational issues when the Manager is off
- Champion the wider vision of the space as "more like a library or a chapel than a shop"
Store Operations
- Opening and closing the store
- Till reconciliation and daily sales reporting
Team Leadership
- Uphold the standard for how the space is run - warm, unhurried, true to TSOL's tone
- Training and onboarding new team members, alongside the Store Manager
- Mentor the part-time team
Events & Conversation Café Programme
- Represent TSOL's tone and values in every interaction — warm and thoughtful, never salesy
- Support and, where needed, run the Conversation Café format when the Store Manager is not there
- Assist with any scheduled events that fall on working days
Escalation
- Escalating any issues to the Store Manager as appropriate
- Troubleshoot day-to-day operational issues (deliveries, maintenance, access)
Candidate Profile
Essentials
- A genuine interest in, or education in, philosophy, psychotherapy or a related field
- An interest in art, history and culture
- Experience in retail
- Confident taking sole charge of a store, including till handling and reconciliation, without a manager on site
- A willingness to learn, evolve and adapt
- Proactive, practical and lots of initiative
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Nice to have
- An existing familiarity with The School of Life's books, courses or content
- Experience working in an independent bookshop, gallery or cultural venue
- Experience coordinating events or public programming
- Outgoing and driven work ethic with ability to work both independently and as part of a team
