Role Overview
We are seeking a commercially driven Strategic Account and Business Development Manager with a strong track record in both new business development and strategic client relationship management. This is a newly created role that will deliberately evolve over time: during the first six months, the primary focus will be winning brand-new business; as the role develops, responsibility will progressively expand to include ownership, retention and growth of agreed key accounts.
The successful candidate will combine the pace and resilience of a new-business “hunter” with the strategic, relationship-led approach of a key account “farmer”. They will work closely with the Business Development team and operational colleagues to create clear ownership of opportunities, ensure strong client handovers and build long-term, commercially valuable partnerships.
This is an opportunity to shape a newly created commercial role: build a meaningful new-business portfolio, establish new strategic relationships and then transition into ownership and growth of key accounts as the business develops its long-term strategic account management model.
Role Evolution
Months 1-6: New Business Focus
- Primary commercial objective: generate £500,000 of brand-new business revenue during the first six months of employment. The agreed KPI framework should confirm whether this target is measured as signed/secured, invoiced or recognised revenue.
- Build and maintain a qualified prospect pipeline from scratch, with sufficient coverage to support the revenue target.
- Identify and target new clients, sectors, agencies and high-value opportunities aligned with the company’s capabilities and growth priorities.
- Own the sales process from prospecting and qualification through to proposal, negotiation and conversion.
- Establish strong relationships with new decision-makers and senior stakeholders, creating the foundations for future strategic accounts.
- Work closely with the Business Development team to agree opportunity ownership, avoid duplication and ensure a coordinated approach to the market.
From Month 6 Onwards: Strategic Business Development & Account Management
- Progressively take ownership of agreed strategic/key accounts in liaison with the Business Development team.
- Continue to generate new business, with the balance gradually shifting from pure hunting toward account growth, retention and strategic development.
- Develop allocated accounts through cross-selling, upselling, stakeholder expansion and identification of new projects, divisions, brands, regions or events.
- Create and maintain strategic account plans, with clear revenue, margin, retention and growth objectives.
- Support the development of a clear and practical transition process for moving newly won clients into ongoing key account management.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

- Use market, competitor and client insight to inform account strategy and wider business growth priorities.
- Advise clients on new opportunities, formats, solutions and innovations relevant to their objectives.
- Negotiate commercially robust agreements that balance client value with sustainable business returns.
E. Commercial Project Oversight
- Maintain commercial and client oversight throughout the project lifecycle, acting as the key link between the client and internal delivery teams. Ensure client expectations, commercial objectives and agreed requirements are understood and maintained, without assuming responsibility for day-to-day project delivery.
- Oversee key milestones from a client and commercial perspective, escalating risks where necessary.

- Support a premium client experience from brief through to on-site delivery and post-project review.

- Maintain accurate and up-to-date CRM records, opportunity stages, next actions and forecasts.
- Provide clear reporting on pipeline, conversion, revenue, margin, account growth and retention.
- Use data and account insight to identify risks, gaps and priority actions.

How Success Will Be Measured
The final KPI framework should be agreed as the role is embedded. Recommended measures include:

- Pipeline health: Agreed qualified pipeline coverage sufficient to support revenue targets.
- New client wins: Number and value of new clients, projects, agency relationships or genuinely new buying relationships.
- Conversion: Opportunity-to-win conversion rate and quality of qualified opportunities.
- Gross margin / profitability: Revenue won and managed at agreed commercial margin expectations.
- CRM & forecasting: Accurate, current pipeline information and reliable forecasting discipline.
- Stakeholder development: Breadth and seniority of relationships established across prospects and managed accounts.
- Account planning: Strategic account plans completed and maintained for allocated key accounts.
- Retention & growth: Client retention, repeat business and year-on-year growth across managed accounts.
What Counts as New Business
For target and commission purposes, the business should agree a clear definition before appointment. A practical definition could include:
- New clients not previously trading with the business.
- New client projects where the relationship and opportunity are originated by the role.
- New agency relationships.
- New divisions, brands or business units within organisations where there is no existing trading relationship.
Clear rules should also be agreed for opportunity attribution, shared wins and the point at which a newly won client transfers into key account ownership.
Ideal Candidate Profile
- 5+ years’ experience in sales, account management, business development or client-facing commercial roles.
- Proven track record of winning new business and growing high-value client relationships.
- Strategic thinker able to move from transactional selling to long-term account development.
- Excellent relationship builder at senior stakeholder level, with the ability to identify and influence multiple stakeholders within complex organisations.
- Strong commercial insight; comfortable working with revenue, gross margin, profitability and account P&L.
- Strong negotiation, influencing and consultative selling skills.
- Able to balance hunting for new business with farming and developing existing relationships.
- Comfortable working autonomously in a newly created role where processes and responsibilities are still evolving.
- Collaborative approach to working with Business Development, Operations, Design, Production and Logistics.
