South Gloucestershire is one of the most exciting places in Britain to work in place leadership.

As part of the West of England combined Authority area, it combines nationally significant growth opportunities with outstanding environmental assets and quality of life. Home to Brabazon, the West Innovation Arc and globally recognised aerospace, defence and advanced manufacturing businesses, the area sits at the heart of the West of England economy and the UK's strategic transport and infrastructure network. More than a third of Bristol's urban footprint lies within South Gloucestershire, alongside thriving market towns, villages, and the southern edge of the Cotswolds.

Few places offer the opportunity to influence growth, infrastructure, planning, regeneration, investment, and environmental stewardship at this scale and in such a varied setting.

For talented place leaders, this is a rare opportunity to help shape the future of a nationally important area at a pivotal moment in its development.

Whether your passion is strategic planning, infrastructure delivery, regeneration, place-making or system leadership, South Gloucestershire provides the scale, ambition, and partnership environment to make a genuine difference. If you are looking for a role where you can leave a legacy, work with exceptional partners and help shape one of the UK's most dynamic places, we would love to hear from you.

About the role

This is a role centred on delivery at scale. You'll lead some of South Gloucestershire's most significant programmes, bringing together major capital investment, regeneration schemes, strategic sites, transport infrastructure and development-led growth to ensure the council's ambitions are translated into visible outcomes.

Working across organisational boundaries and through a complex network of partners, you will ensure major programmes are aligned, funded, sequenced and delivered in a way that maximises impact for South Gloucestershire's residents, businesses and places. You'll play a critical role in bringing together regeneration, infrastructure, transport, environmental ambitions and investment opportunities, creating the conditions for successful delivery while maintaining robust governance, assurance and value for money.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

Alongside a significant portfolio of regeneration and infrastructure activity, the role also has responsibility for leisure and active wellbeing. At a pivotal point in the council's approach to leisure provision, you'll help shape the future of a portfolio that sits at the intersection of capital investment, community wellbeing and prevention. With ageing assets, evolving delivery models and growing opportunities to attract external investment, it presents both a significant challenge and an opportunity to make a lasting difference to the health and wellbeing of local communities.

About you

You will be a strong delivery leader with significant experience in regeneration, infrastructure, capital programmes, major projects, development-related infrastructure or complex programme management.

You will need to understand how to operate successfully in a political, partnership-led environment. You will be commercially aware, confident with governance and risk, and able to bring together multidisciplinary teams, external partners and senior stakeholders around a clear delivery agenda.

We are looking for someone who can bring structure without overcomplicating things, pace without losing collaboration, and confidence without being overly directive.

You may already be operating at Service Director level, or you may be ready for your first role at this level. If you are stepping up, you will need to show that you have thought carefully about the shift into corporate and system leadership, and that you are ready to land quickly in a role with visibility, complexity and pace.

This is a chance to lead delivery in a place where the agenda is real, immediate and varied. From strategic sites and infrastructure investment to regeneration, transport, active wellbeing and capital delivery, the portfolio offers breadth, challenge and the opportunity to make visible progress.
