In this role you will be Variable Base with occasional travel required for meetings and site visits.
Job Purpose
As part of the Whole Systems team, we need to ensure this is done in the most efficient, economic and timely way by coordinating with internal and external stakeholders regarding our investments. As a Strategic Investment Planning Lead, you’ll be responsible for the early stages of the investment planning and optioneering processes. This will utilise digital systems so there is a need to track various network drivers at site, circuit, subregional and regional level from across the Electricity Transmission businesses. The information will then be used to make the most optimal decisions in terms of strategic intents for our assets out to 2050.
You’ll work closely with Infrastructure Development and Asset Operations to ensure complex future site needs are captured and aligned with other network drivers to manage risk. You’ll also partner with Customer Development to understand customer requirements, and with Network Design and Network Operations & Intelligence to identify constraints.
What You'll Do
- Maintain a centralised database for NGET to interrogate all investment drivers at a site, circuit and regional level, ensuring data sources used are governed with regular updates agreed with business units.
- Undertake continuous improvement alongside the digital team for network driver collation, interpretation, and application.
- Chair subregional strategy technical workshops to liaise drivers among different teams and coordinate for a future-proof direction of travelling.
- Work with Asset Operations team to define strategic intents for network sites and circuits, supporting strategic business investment planning and the effective management of long-term operational risk.
- Work with the Regional Strategy team to co-ordinate the investment portfolio and find synergies and whole system opportunities.
- Work with the Infrastructure Development team to provide input and support in early project development phase.
- Work with the Network Design team to quantify the transmission system requirements, optioneering, design risks for regional strategies and maintain vision of the long-term infrastructure plans.
- Provide key technical subject matter expert (SME) resources across the wider team and for external engagements such as DNO, NESO, OFGEM, and Combined Authorities.
- Maintain knowledge on the end-to-end planning processes of business requirements to deliver under the current regulatory funding deal.
- Implement approaches to ensure successful training and development of yourself and staff within the wider directory, including developing a training framework, delivering training and knowledge sharing across the department.

About You
With a degree in an Engineering or other numerate discipline, or a HNC combined with a substantial understanding of electrical theory, you’ll have a detailed understanding of power systems engineering, analysis and application.
Relevant experience across the UK transmission business or a related business, preferably including experience in Network Design, Project Development, or Asset Management is key, as is a thorough understanding of National Grid obligations with regard to OFGEM, DESNZ and other license conditions.
You’ll also need a good understanding of the regulatory framework, price control processes and relevant funding mechanisms. Strong customer relationships and networking skills with external and internal stakeholders are essential, alongside strong communication skills with the ability to build relationships and work collaboratively across the business.
In addition, analytical skills coupled with a technical aptitude for business systems development are required, as is a full UK driving licence.
What You'll Get
A competitive salary between £61,000 – £72,000 dependent on capability
As well as your base salary, you will receive
- 26 days holiday, plus eight statutory days, an option to buy extra holiday days, and the option to holiday swap up to 3 bank holiday days

- A generous pension scheme, double matched up to 6% of your salary each month. For every £1 you contribute we’ll put in another £2, so if you put in 6%, we’ll add 12% giving a total of 18% to your pension pot
