Role Description
The Strategy Senior Officer - Water is a full-time hybrid role based in England, United Kingdom, with a mix of office-based and home working. The role involves leading and supporting strategic work related to water environments, including rivers, lakes, wetlands, coastal waters, and catchments. Day-to-day tasks include contributing to policy development, planning and coordinating water-related programmes, analysing evidence and data to inform decisions, and preparing briefings and reports for senior colleagues and external stakeholders. The post holder will collaborate with internal teams, government departments, partners, and stakeholders to align water strategy with wider environmental objectives and regulatory frameworks. The role also involves monitoring progress against strategic goals, identifying risks and opportunities, and supporting the design of projects and initiatives that improve water quality, resilience, and nature recovery.

- Strong strategic thinking and planning abilities, with experience contributing to environmental or water-related policies and programmes.
- Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to interpret evidence, data, and technical information to inform recommendations.
- Effective communication skills, including clear written and verbal communication, the ability to prepare briefings and reports, and confidence presenting to varied audiences.
- Proven collaboration and stakeholder engagement skills, with experience working across teams and with external partners such as government bodies, NGOs, and local organisations.
- Organisational and project coordination skills, including managing multiple priorities, meeting deadlines, and supporting delivery of strategic initiatives.
- Knowledge of environmental policy, water management, or nature conservation in England, or the motivation and ability to develop this expertise quickly.
- Proficiency with standard office and collaboration tools (e.g., word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software, virtual meeting platforms).
- Relevant degree or equivalent experience in environmental science, geography, ecology, water management, public policy, or a related field.
- Commitment to Natural England’s mission, including improving the natural environment, advancing nature recovery, and promoting inclusive access to green spaces.
