Job Summary
This role supports the University of Southampton performance sport programme through strength and conditioning coaching, programming, athlete profiling, progress tracking, and support for scholarship and performance team athletes. The post holder also assists with TASS athlete sessions, contributes to athlete communication and guidance, maintains records of support delivered, reviews relevant performance sport information, supports safety within delivery environments, and contributes to the wider Active-for-All sport vision.
IUSCA IQF Classification
This role appears to align most closely with IQF Level 4, as it involves delivery, programming, coaching, athlete profiling, progress tracking, and support for scholarship and performance team athletes within a defined university performance sport structure. The role reports to the Performance Sport Lead and has no line management responsibility, which suggests defined-scope practice rather than full autonomous Level 6 professional accountability.
There are some Level 6-facing elements, including working without supervision, planning and delivering training plans over several months, supporting TASS athletes, and reviewing best practice across performance sport contexts. However, the person specification frames problem-solving mainly as adapting within established practices and procedures, and the essential education requirement does not require a degree.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Salary and Role Alignment
- Grey. Salary is not disclosed, so full salary and role alignment cannot be assessed. The role is graded internally as Level 2b, but the actual salary is not provided in the document. The responsibilities appear broadly consistent with a Level 4 defined-scope practitioner role, although the requirement for UKSCA qualification, work without supervision, multi-month training planning, athlete profiling, and support for TASS and performance sport provision suggests the role should not be treated as a low-level delivery-only position.
- IUSCA recommended minimum salary: £30,000 per year

This minimum recommendation reflects the Level 4 classification, the requirement for S&C-specific competence, the university performance sport setting, the need to programme and coach S&C sessions, support athlete profiling and progress tracking, work with scholarship and team athletes, and operate with a degree of independent practice. A higher salary may be appropriate if the post holder is expected to lead programme design across multiple teams, hold substantial responsibility for athlete outcomes, or operate without meaningful senior S&C supervision.
