Part Time STR Worker/OT Assistant Opportunity
An exciting opportunity is available for those who are eager to develop their career and gain valuable experience in the Young People's Home Treatment Team as an STR Worker/OT assistant within the Brookside Acute Services.
The Post Holder Will Achieve This By
Under supervision and guidance from a qualified Nurse or Occupational Therapist, the post holder will support the assessment, planning, and delivery of care to young people within groups and individually. The post holder will contribute to the development of the team and support their peers and the team lead. The post holder will support students and other staff within the team as required. They will have a commitment to collaborative working and actively supporting and liaising with other health and social professionals and agencies.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the assessment and treatment of a defined group of service users and carers with complex needs.
- Work as part of Brookside Nursing & Occupational Therapy team to provide care to young people
- Responsible for own work and actions.
- Carrying out and monitoring treatment programmes and therapeutic programme as directed.
- Forming part of an interdependent multi-disciplinary team helping to ensure that their input is integrated into the service user’s overall care & treatment plans.
- Promoting the recovery of service users and maintaining their independence.
Clinical Skills
- To assist the Nurses and Occupational Therapist in the assessment, interventions and reviews of service users.
- To undertake skilled technical/creative and specialised support work with service users in therapeutic activities to promote recovery and well -being.
- To work independently to facilitate group and individual work planned with a Nurse and Occupational Therapist and /or YPHTT team members.
- According to service needs, to be responsible for designated individual work, under supervision.
- To form professional relationships with service users who often exhibit challenging behaviour and communicate with them in a way that respects their views, autonomy and culture.
- To monitor the service user’s progress, taking into account their environment and adjust own clinical interventions accordingly.
- To work and liaise appropriately with the multi-disciplinary team, including attendance at clinical related and business meetings, as directed by the Lead OT and YPHTT manager.
- Maintain records and report observations of service users’ progress and performance verbally, in writing and using RIO.
- To ensure that all clinical contact carried out incorporates risk assessment and appropriate management of risk.
- To participate in the development of evidence-based delivery of therapeutic interventions, as directed by qualified Nurses & Occupational Therapists.
- Modify intervention as needed depending on risk assessment, the situation and own skills and knowledge. Referring to the qualified Nurse & Occupational Therapist for support and advice ensuring that they are aware of any modifications made.
- Provide support to service users with regards to daily living, including self-care, leisure and vocational/educational pursuits.
- Inform service users of facts using empathy, understanding and reassurance, adjusting communication style to the needs of the service user. This includes promoting and upholding the rights and diversity of individuals.
- Deal calmly and professionally with direct/indirect exposure to angry or distressed service users or highly distressing or emotional information (e.g. complaints and serious incidents) about services and staff performance.
- Understand and deliver care in line with NELFT Safeguarding Policies (Adults and Children) and the Whistle Blowing Policy. Discuss issues of safeguarding with staff and ensure appropriate advice is sought and received when required.
- Work collaboratively with other services, which may include children’s services. Ensure robust communication and liaisons where relevant information, relating to a child or young person (0-19), is obtained during the course of their work.
- Order equipment & resources as agreed or directed by the qualified Nurse or Occupational Therapist.
- Reflect on and evaluate your own values, priorities, interests and effectiveness.
- Promote health, safety and security in the work setting.
- Demonstrate, and instruct, on the use of equipment to ensure safety.
- Advise family on prevention of accidents.
- Report any incident/untoward incidents/near misses to self, service users or carers to the manager.
- Minimise the risk of spreading infection by cleaning, disinfecting and maintaining environments. Perform hand hygiene and use personal protective equipment to prevent the spread of infection.
- Recognise the need for further advice, guidance and support as appropriate.

Starting with NELFT
NELFT place a great deal of importance on new starters being properly welcomed and inducted into the Trust. All new starters will join the Trust on the first Monday of each month and will undertake a comprehensive induction of up to two weeks which will include mandatory training, systems training and the allocation of equipment. As part of the process new starters will have the opportunity to also meet the executive team, senior managers and attend a number of drop-in sessions focusing on engagement, health and wellbeing and key processes. The induction will be held at our head office in Goodmayes Hospital/
Probationary Period
This post will be subject to a probationary period. Internal applicants are exempt from the probationary period (unless you are an internal applicant currently part way through a probationary period or currently a bank member of staff).
High Cost Area Supplement Outer London (B&D, Redbridge, Havering and Waltham Forest, Goodmayes)
This post also attracts payment for High Cost Area Supplement of 15% of the basic salary (with a minimum of £4,870 to a maximum of £6,137 p.a. pro rata for part time).
