Senior Design Engineer
Location: Wakefield
Job Type: Permanent, Full Time
Hours: 37.5 hours per week
Salary: Competitive, based on experience
The Company
Some structural steel projects are straightforward.
Others require someone who can look beyond the drawing, understand how the structure will behave, and make sure the engineering solution works from calculation through to fabrication and construction.
This is an established structural steel business with more than 75 years of experience delivering projects across the UK and Europe. Its work ranges from standard building frames through to technically demanding structures, with the scale and capability to handle significant volumes of structural steel.
They are now looking for an experienced Senior Design Engineer to join their technical team in Wakefield.
The Role
You will be responsible for developing structural engineering solutions that are safe, practical and commercially viable, working closely with clients, engineers and wider project teams.
You will:
- Design structural steel solutions from initial requirements through to detailed engineering.
- Analyse structures, applying loadings and assessing stresses and load paths.
- Develop calculations and design information using industry-standard engineering software.
- Collaborate with clients, project teams and other professionals to turn requirements into workable designs.
- Deliver solutions that consider structural integrity, buildability, compliance and cost.
- Support tenders and projects with technical input, calculations and progress reporting.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
