Structural Designer

The Opportunity
We are seeking a Structural Designer to join our team in our Sunderland office. In this role, you will design structures and steelwork while producing associated technical documentation, drawings, 3D models, bills of material, and fabrication packs. Support will include personalised training, coaching, mentoring, and twice-yearly development reviews to foster growth and competence.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop structures and steelwork from the specified brief
- Generate 3D models and technical drawings in line with company CAD standards
- Produce technical documentation aligned with internal policies
- Manage drawings, models, BOMs, and technical documents via company systems
- Peer-review colleagues’ designs, drawings, and documentation
- Attend design review meetings to validate progress
- Ensure compliance with project briefs, industry standards, and regulations
- Perform structural analysis to improve safety, DfMA (Design for Manufacture and Assembly), and functionality
- Promote value engineering, standardisation, risk reduction, and a right-first-time approach
- Conduct site visits and surveys to aid project delivery
- Provide cross-departmental support when design expertise is required
- Mentor junior team members as needed
- Assess and resolve Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs) in the department
- Engage with lessons learned and continuous improvement initiatives
- Develop processes to enhance efficiency and project delivery
- Adhere to ISO 9001 processes and quality control templates
- Contribute to performance reviews and implement improvement measures
- Drive departamental and business objectives on an annual basis

Minimum Requirements
- Qualification: Relevant HNC or degree in design or engineering discipline
- Experience: Proven track record as a Structural Designer
- Animal Sector Knowledge: Familiarity with bulk material handling, conveyor systems, and related infrastructure
- CAD Proficiency: Proficiency in 3D CAD software (Tekla Structures is preferred)
- Collaboration Tools: Basic Common Data Environment (CDE) knowledge (Trimble Connect preferred)
- Detailed Drafting Skills: Skilled in detailing steelwork and adhering to drafting standards
- Structural Design Understanding:
- Robust knowledge of design processes and documentation requirements
- In-depth awareness of structural standards, regulations, and principles
- Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) knowledge
- Basic grasp of checkpoint design review methodologies
- Manufacturing Insight: Knowledge of structural steel fabrication processes
- Productivity Suites: Proficient in Microsoft Office applications
- Communication Skills: Ability to clearly articulate design concepts
- Multitasking: Capacity to manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Attention to Detail: Strong commitment to quality performance and precision
