BUILD MORE THAN STRUCTURES. HELP BUILD WHAT COMES NEXT.

We’ve been engineering buildings across Cumbria and beyond since 1967.

In that time, A L Daines & Partners has worked on more than 15,000 projects – from extensions and historic buildings to housing developments, hotels, commercial buildings and major industrial projects.

But we’re much more interested in what comes next.

ENGINEERING WITHOUT BEING JUST ANOTHER NUMBER

We’re a small, independent civil and structural engineering practice based in Carlisle.

That means our engineers don’t spend their careers designing one small part of somebody else’s project.

You’ll meet the client. Visit the site. Work out the problem. Develop the solution. Produce the design. Talk to architects and contractors. And see what you designed actually get built.

Some projects are straightforward. Some definitely aren’t.

That’s part of the appeal.

WE LIKE PRACTICAL ENGINEERS

Engineering is about more than getting a calculation to pass.

We like simple, buildable solutions. We like engineers who are curious about how buildings actually go together and who are prepared to get out of the office and look at the problem for themselves.

You won’t be expected to know everything.

But we do want people who are prepared to think, ask questions and take responsibility.

YOUR CAREER SHOULDN’T STAND STILL EITHER

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

We’re looking for an experienced Structural Engineer who wants room to develop.

That could mean becoming Chartered.

It could mean running larger projects, developing client relationships or leading other engineers.

And for someone with the experience and ambition to go further, there is a genuine opportunity to become part of the future leadership – and potentially future ownership – of the practice.

We want people who can help shape A L Daines, not simply work for it.

THE WORK

Variety is probably one of the best things we can offer.

Our structural work ranges from domestic alterations and bespoke homes through historic buildings, commercial developments and large industrial structures.

We work with steel, timber, masonry and concrete – and you’ll regularly encounter existing buildings where there isn’t a neat answer waiting in a design guide.

If you enjoy actually solving engineering problems, you’ll get plenty of them here.

THE WAY WE WORK

We’re proud of the experience and reputation the practice has built over nearly 60 years.

We’re also ambitious about where it goes next.

We’re investing in better digital design, BIM, automation and new technology to make engineering more efficient – without losing the judgement and practical experience that good engineering depends on.

And because we’re a small team, you’ll have a genuine opportunity to influence how we do it.

Got an idea for a better way of working?

Good. We want to hear it.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

We’re more interested in the engineer than the perfect CV.

Ideally you’ll have several years’ structural engineering experience and be comfortable designing independently and dealing directly with clients, architects and contractors.

Chartered or working towards Chartership would be great.

Practical judgement, curiosity and the ability to take ownership matter just as much.

LIFE OUTSIDE ENGINEERING MATTERS TOO

Our office is in Carlisle, with the Lake District on the doorstep.

We offer flexible working hours and trust our engineers to manage their workload rather than watching the clock.

We want ambitious engineers.

We don’t think that should mean giving up everything outside work.
