Location: Dedham, Colchester, Essex Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience Job Type: Full Time Department: Structural Engineering
Are you a Structural Engineer or Structural Technician looking to develop your career in a consultancy where you'll be involved in projects from concept through to construction?
Iceni Consulting help developers, housebuilders and contractors make better development decisions through coordinated engineering expertise. By bringing together structural engineering, civil engineering, surveying and technical planning support, we help clients identify constraints early, reduce project risk and deliver developments with greater confidence.
We're looking for a Structural Engineer or Technician to join our growing team in Colchester. Working alongside our structural and civil engineering teams, you'll contribute to a wide variety of projects, delivering practical, buildable and cost-effective structural solutions across the development lifecycle.
Depending on your experience, you'll be involved in structural design, detailing, technical reporting, project coordination and site inspections, while working closely with architects, contractors and fellow design professionals. Unlike more specialised roles, you'll have the opportunity to gain exposure to projects from early feasibility and planning support through to detailed design and construction, developing both your technical expertise and your understanding of how successful developments are delivered.
As part of a collaborative and supportive team, you'll be encouraged to take ownership of your work, contribute to project success and continue your professional development within a consultancy that values long-term growth and progression.
What You'll Be Working On
As part of our Structural Engineering team, you'll contribute to a diverse range of developments and engineering challenges, including:
- Structural analysis and design of buildings and associated structures.
- Preparation of structural calculations, engineering drawings and technical reports.
- Production of detailing, schedules and construction information.
- Coordination with architects, contractors and fellow design consultants.
- Site inspections, structural surveys and monitoring visits.
- Technical support for planning applications and development projects.
- Collaborative project delivery alongside Iceni's civil engineering, highways and drainage teams.
- Client liaison and participation in project meetings.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
