I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Position Overview

The Structured Credit team is a market-facing investment team specialising in the CLO asset class and actively managing positions across funds with approximately $9bn in assets under management. Collateralised Loan Obligations (CLOs) are securities backed by portfolios of senior-secured loans to US and European corporates, generating returns primarily through regular interest payments.

As an intern within the team, you will gain first-hand exposure to the daily decision-making of a market-facing CLO investment team. The role combines market analysis, investment research, and data-driven problem-solving. You will develop practical experience using Excel, Bloomberg, AI tools, and SQL to analyse investments, support portfolio management, and maintain the team's analytics engine. You will also have opportunities to engage with external market participants and build an understanding of how CLO funds operate.

Responsibilities

  • Supporting bond auctions and related trading activity.
  • Analysing primary and secondary CLO market opportunities and helping to develop trade ideas.
  • Maintaining and improving the team's analytics engine, including data and model checks.
  • Using Excel, Bloomberg, AI tools, and SQL to support investment analysis and portfolio monitoring.
  • Building an understanding of fund structures, cash flows, and NAV processes.
  • Supporting single-name credit analysis using internal research and relevant market-data platforms.

Qualifications / Skills

The successful candidate will ideally possess:

  • Strong interest in finance, markets, and investment, with a clear drive to generate returns for investors.
  • An outstanding academic record in a science-based subject, economics, finance, or a related discipline.
  • Strong Excel skills and an interest in developing proficiency in Bloomberg, SQL, and financial analysis.
  • Interest in and competency with current AI tools and models, with the judgement to use them responsibly, validate outputs, and deliver accurate, timely results.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the confidence and initiative to contribute views clearly and ensure their voice is heard.
  • A high work ethic, strong initiative, and willingness to take ownership in a fast-paced, market-facing environment.
  • High attention to detail, intellectual curiosity, and a willingness to learn.
