Job summary

The University of Birmingham's Student Living team seeks to recruit student ambassadors to contribute to a focus group aimed at enhancing the living experience for Black students on campus.

Inspired by the 2022 Unite Students, Living Black Report, the ambassadors will share their personal experiences, identify potential barriers, and contribute to the development of a resource package to support future Black students.

Main duties

• Participate in Focus Group Discussions: Actively contribute to quarterly focus group meetings, sharing insights and experiences related to living in University accommodation as a Black student.
• Identify Barriers and Challenges: Identify and discuss potential barriers, such as social isolation, cultural differences, or lack of familiarity with academic support services, faced by Black students in adapting to University accommodation.
• Contribute to Resource Development: Collaborate with the University Accommodation team to develop a resource package that provides guidance and support to future Black students, including information on social events, cultural activities, academic success strategies, and existing support services.
• Represent the Student Perspective: Advocate for the needs and experiences of Black students within the University Accommodation community.

Required knowledge, skills, qualifications & experience

• Current or Previous Student Living Experience: Have experience living in University accommodation.
• Strong Communication Skills: Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Interpersonal Skills: Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
• Cultural Awareness: Have a strong understanding of cultural diversity and sensitivity to the experiences of Black students.
• Commitment: Be committed to contributing to a more inclusive and supportive living environment for Black students.

The University of Birmingham restricts all students to working up to 20 hours per week during term time for a maximum of 13 consecutive weeks.
