About This Role
The Excelsior Academy is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Student Manager to join our pastoral team on a maternity cover basis, starting in September/ October 2026.
This is a rewarding opportunity to make a real difference to the lives of young people. Working closely with the Head of Learning, you will support a cohort of students to overcome barriers to learning and achieve high standards of behaviour, attendance, and academic success. You will be a key point of contact for parents and carers, build strong relationships with families, and work collaboratively with external agencies to put the right support in place for students who need it most.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide leadership and pastoral support for all students in a cohort, promoting high standards of behaviour, learning, achievement and welfare
- Implement the school's behaviour policy and provide general student support day to day
- Act as the first point of contact for parents, helping to identify students who would benefit from additional intervention and contributing to individual and group support plans
- Build and maintain relationships with families, liaising with external agencies where appropriate
- Support transition arrangements, including from Year 6 and to post-16 providers
- Support reporting to parents through the DPR and parents' evenings
- Keep accurate records and produce written reports as required
- Contribute to extra-curricular activities, student leadership initiatives
- Complete home visits and lead on initiatives to improve attendance, punctuality, behaviour and parent engagement
- Supervise students at lunchtimes and support a safe, positive school environment.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
