The Department of English invites applications for a Student Research Assistant position:

POSITION SUMMARY

The Department of English at McGill University is seeking a highly motivated and skilled Student Research Assistant to support a collaborative SSHRC-funded research project examining wartime textiles as sites of communication, memory, and cultural history. The successful candidate will work with rare books, archival collections, museum objects, exhibitions, and contribute to research activities involving an international network of researchers, librarians, curators, and creative collaborators.

The position will provide opportunities to engage in archival research, data management, and the documentation and analysis of historical materials.

The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Professor Nathalie Cooke (Department of English), in collaboration with McGill librarians Jacquelyn Sundberg and Kristen Howard.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct archival and bibliographical research.
  • Undertake collections audits in McGill Rare Books & Special Collections and partner institutions.
  • Identify wartime knitting patterns, correspondence, and related historical sources.
  • Develop and maintain annotated bibliographies using Zotero or EndNote.
  • Support keynote presentations for 3 talks in fall term and prepare for the Richler Writer in Residency.
  • Contribute to the year-end publication and dissemination report.

Qualifications

  • Excellent research and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated experience with Zotero or EndNote.
  • Experience working with archives, special collections, or historical sources.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Reading knowledge of French is required.
  • Knitting or other textile-making experience is expected and welcomed.

SOMMAIRE DU POSTE

Le Département d’anglais de l’Université McGill est à la recherche d’un(e) assistant(e) de recherche étudiant(e) motivé(e) et compétent(e) pour soutenir un projet de recherche collaboratif financé par le CRSH portant sur les textiles de guerre comme vecteurs de communication, de mémoire et d’histoire culturelle. La personne retenue travaillera avec des livres rares, des collections d’archives, des objets muséaux, des expositions et contribuera aux activités de recherche menées avec un réseau international de chercheurs, de bibliothécaires, de conservateurs et de collaborateurs créatifs.

Ce poste offrira l’occasion de participer à des travaux de recherche archivistique, à la gestion de données ainsi qu’à la documentation et à l’analyse de matériaux historiques.

La personne retenue travaillera sous la supervision de la professeure Nathalie Cooke (Département d’anglais), en collaboration avec les bibliothécaires de McGill Jacquelyn Sundberg et Kristen Howard.

RESPONSABILITÉS

  • Effectuer des recherches archivistiques et bibliographiques.
  • Réaliser des audits des collections aux Livres rares et collections spéciales de McGill ainsi qu’auprès des institutions partenaires.
  • Identifier des patrons de tricot de guerre, de la correspondance et d’autres sources historiques connexes.
  • Élaborer et tenir à jour des bibliographies annotées à l’aide de Zotero ou d’EndNote.
  • Soutenir la préparation des présentations principales pour trois conférences au trimestre d’automne et contribuer à la préparation de la résidence d’écrivain Richler.
  • Contribuer à la publication de fin d’année et au rapport de diffusion des résultats.

Qualifications

  • Excellentes compétences en recherche et en organisation
  • Expérience avérée avec Zotero ou EndNote.
  • Expérience de travail avec des archives, des collections spéciales ou des sources historiques.
  • Maîtrise de la suite Microsoft Office.
  • Une connaissance du français écrit est requise.
  • Une expérience en tricot ou dans la confection d’autres ouvrages textiles est souhaitée et constitue un atout.
