Job Title: Sub-Editor (Maternity Cover)

Reports to: Chief Sub-Editor

Title: Belfast Telegraph & Sunday Life

Contract: Full-Time, temporary for approx. 1 year

Role Purpose

The Belfast Telegraph is seeking to recruit a Sub-Editor to provide maternity cover. The successful applicant will play a key part in our sub-editing team, editing and preparing our journalism for publication across our digital and print channels.

The focus for this role is to ensure that the highest possible editorial standards and the most efficient digital-focused production processes are maintained every day.

Role Responsibilities

  • Edit articles for grammar, punctuation, clarity and accuracy
  • Write compelling headlines that meet both print expectations, and SEO and UX demands for digital
  • Ensure content is free from legal issues
  • Enhance content for digital publication as required
  • Work to exacting deadlines
  • Understand and uphold the style, standards and ethics of Mediahuis
  • Edit photos, pulling photos from image management applications, cropping photos for publication, verifying images

Experience And Qualifications

  • At least five years of professional journalism experience as a senior sub-editor – preferably with some digital experience
  • An excellent knowledge of media law, especially defamation, privacy, copyright and data protection

Skills

  • Ability to adapt to in a changing environment
  • Expert news judgment, editing skills, speed and accountability
  • Demonstrably strong communication, copy-editing and print and digital production skills
  • Demonstrating consistency when putting together coherent and cohesive headlines, sub-heads, standfirsts, and captions
  • Ability to use online tools
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Working in a collaborative and multidisciplinary way under exacting deadlines
  • Composure - you will be required to make good decisions in a fast-paced environment
  • Enthusiasm, adaptability and a high degree of integrity and personal responsibility
