Role: Sub-Editor for DIVA’s Print Magazine

THIS ROLE IS FOR DIVA’S PRINT MAGAZINE. YOU MUST HAVE AT LEAST ONE YEAR’S SUB-EDITING EXPERIENCE.

Do you eat, sleep and breathe queer culture? Are you an experienced sub-editor with outstanding attention to detail? Keen to work with a diverse LGBTQIA+ team? Then you could be just what we’re looking for.

DIVA magazine is searching for a hardworking, talented, flexible sub-editor, to work five days every two months on a freelance basis. This is a remote, home-based role with occasional opportunities to meet up with the team in person.

Responsibilities

As DIVA sub-editor, you will:

  • Sub-edit copy as provided by the editor for correct spelling, grammar, punctuation, tone and house style.
  • Fact-check copy.
  • Ensure copy is free from legal issues.
  • Rework copy for flow and tone as needed.
  • Edit copy for length where required.
  • Write headlines, stand firsts, picture captions and pull-quotes as required.
  • Layout copy on the page in InDesign, editing as needed to ensure it fits.
  • Liaise directly with contributors about any issues arising from their copy via email.
  • Communicate with the editor about any issues with copy and/or ongoing issues with particular contributors.
  • Take responsibility for overseeing and developing the DIVA house style guide.

About You

You have:

  • A keen eye for detail.
  • At least one year’s sub-editing experience working on a print publication or similar fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
  • Experience working with InDesign.
  • A calm head on your shoulders.
  • Excellent general knowledge.
  • Great time management skills and the ability to work to tight deadlines.

You are:

  • A stickler for impeccable spelling and grammar.
  • Well versed in up-to-date media law.
  • Creative and able to craft engaging headlines.
  • A hardworking team player and skilled communicator.
  • Passionate about queer culture.
