Job Summary
The Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA) is a part of the Ministry of Defence responsible for the procurement, in-service support, and disposal of the UK’s nuclear submarines. Our work is of unparalleled strategic importance nationally and internationally, ensuring the security of the UK’s continuous at-sea nuclear deterrent (CASD), and delivering some of the most technically complex programmes in defence. At least one of four nuclear-armed submarines, supported by smaller attack submarines, is on patrol at all times: 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

The primary delivery location for this position is Bristol Abbey Wood or Devonport, Plymouth.

Job Description
This Submarine Disposal and Rosyth Capability (SDRC) post supports the SDRC Chief Engineer by managing Safety, Environment Assurance, and Compliance (SEAC) within SDRC. It assists the SDRC Chief Engineer, who, per their delegation, acts as Platform Authority and Naval Reactor Plant Authorisee Duty Holder Representative for submarine disposal. The SDRC Head is the Duty Holder for the disposal phase, which now includes developing the Submarine Disposal Programme to explore new disposal options for UK submarines.
As SEAC Lead, The Post Performs a Critical Role Providing Independent, Expert Advice And Assurance To The SDRC Head (Duty Holder) And SDRC Chief Engineer To Ensure Activities Meet Authorisation Certificate Requirements By:
- Interpreting and applying Nuclear Authorisation Conditions, guidance, and relevant good practice from International Atomic Agency standards, Office for Nuclear Regulation and Defence Nuclear Safety Regulator.
- Issuing clear instructions and advice on Authorisee to Duty Holder matters to maintain compliance with current Authorisation Certificates via Nuclear Safety Management Arrangements.
- Leading and evaluating internal assurance activities to assess SDRC’s compliance with Nuclear Safety Management Arrangements as a Duty Holder.
This post is on the MOD Civilian Nuclear Post Control List (PCL) and may attract the Nuclear Recruitment and Retention Allowance (RRA). This is a discretionary allowance. The post being listed on the PCL does not mean that the post holder will have an automatic entitlement to receive the RRA. The NSQEP RRA is not a contractual allowance and can be amended or withdrawn without notice in line with MOD Main and Submarine Delivery Agency policy.
This post attracts the NSQEP recruitment retention allowance of up to £6,000 per annum. This allowance is discretionary and is dependent on a candidates ability to successfully demonstrate and evidence their competence, qualifications and experience to an independent panel of Subject Matter Experts.
As the post holder will have access to very sensitive information, there are limitations on travelling to a small number of countries and we will undertake additional security checks as part of the recruitment process. Person specification
The successful candidate will need to demonstrate they have the following:
- Nuclear Induction Course (NIC) or Equivalent
- Chartered or Incorporated Engineer or equivalent relevant professional registration (or the ability to obtain in 12 months).
- Relevant Level 6 (or higher) qualification or equivalent experience.
- Extensive experience in a Defence or Civil nuclear programme or an appropriate 'high hazard' industry.
- Experience of maintaining Nuclear Submarines.
- Experience of Operating / Nuclear Submarine operations.
- Experience of Nuclear Submarine dockyard support operations.
- Demonstrable awareness of the challenges of Submarine Infrastructure projects.
- Demonstrable awareness of the challenges of maintaining Submarines, particularly Disposal Submarines.
- Experience of providing technical advice at a senior level and leading the delivery of successful engineering outcomes in multidisciplinary projects
Qualifications
- L6 or higher Engineering or Science HND / degree or equivalent proven experience.
Memberships
- Any relevant Engineering institution with at least Affiliate/Associate (or Student Associate) membership.
- Full CENG/IENG membership must be obtainable within 12 months of being in role.
