About The Role

Working in the BT Subsea team therefore means contributing to the protection of the UK’s domestic and international connectivity as well as playing a key role in the evolution of BT’s UK and global connectivity. As the Subsea Marine Delivery Specialist, you will play a vital role in protecting this critical infrastructure.
This role will be responsible for the safe, efficient, and commercially effective delivery of marine and subsea activities across the asset lifecycle, including planning, installation, inspection, maintenance, upgrade and retirement of subsea cable systems and associated infrastructure. The role provides leadership and coordination of offshore execution activities while managing interfaces with consortium partners, marine contractors, project teams and regulatory stakeholders to ensure successful delivery of strategic asset objectives.
Alongside the Subsea Integrity and Operations Manager and Subsea Asset Strategy Lead, this role blends technical strategy, commercialisation, product thinking, and critical infrastructure risk management to build a subsea platform that is fit for the next decade of growth, resilience, and competitive advantage.
You will be joining a team that’s rebuilding capability, investing in new technologies, and shaping the future of subsea operations. After years of underinvestment, this and other roles within the team have been created to ensure BT Subsea are able to deliver on the strategy of Operational Excellence, Resilience, Commercial Value, and Innovation.
The successful candidate must be a decisive technical leader who is capable of balancing risk, safety, operational readiness, commercial obligations, and system resilience while making rapid, high quality decisions that protect the subsea cable network, BT and the UK.
This role requires DV eligibility
The role is hybrid (3 days in office) & can be based in either: Birmingham / Ipswich / London
What You’ll Be Doing
Marine Operations and Delivery
- Lead the planning, coordination, and execution of offshore marine and subsea campaigns, ensuring safe and efficient delivery.
- Manage all phases of offshore mobilization and demobilization activities, coordinating vessel, equipment, contractor, and stakeholder interfaces.
- Oversee offshore operations, proactively managing risks, schedules, resources, and operational dependencies to achieve project objectives.
- Monitor campaign performance against scope, budget, schedule, and key project milestones, implementing corrective actions where required.
- Ensure delivery of marine and subsea campaigns in compliance with contractual requirements, service levels, and agreed performance indicators (KPIs).
- Drive operational excellence to deliver projects safely, on schedule, and within approved budgets.
- Act as a marine focal point for offshore incidents, emergency response, and repair activities, participating in an on-call rota as required.
- Provide visible leadership and decision-making support during offshore execution, facilitating effective issue resolution and stakeholder engagement.
- Capture, analyse, and implement lessons learned and continuous improvement initiatives to enhance future campaign performance and operational efficiency.
- Utilise Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to support offshore planning, spatial analysis, route development, asset management, and operational decision-making.
- Collaborate with internal teams, contractors, vessel operators, and regulatory bodies to ensure successful project delivery and compliance with relevant standards and regulations.
- Support the technical aspects of crossing agreements.

Consortia Management and Stakeholder Leadership
- Represent the organisation within international submarine cable consortium working groups, governance forums, and decision-making bodies.
- Act as a company representative within maintenance consortia, ensuring effective collaboration and alignment with consortium partners.
- Coordinate operational, maintenance, and project delivery activities across multiple consortium owners, operators, and external stakeholders.
- Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory requirements, consortium agreements, governance frameworks, and industry standards.
- Build consensus among diverse stakeholders on investment priorities, maintenance strategies, asset lifecycle planning, and system upgrade programmes.
- Support the development and evaluation of business cases for major capital investments, asset interventions, technology refresh initiatives, and network capacity enhancements.
- Facilitate stakeholder alignment on end-of-life planning, retirement strategies, and transition programmes for ageing cable system infrastructure.
- Lead stakeholder communications relating to system performance, marine operations, project delivery activities, outages, and service availability.
- Ensure consortium commitments, contractual obligations, and agreed actions are clearly understood, effectively managed, and delivered.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with consortium members, suppliers, regulators, and industry partners to support successful asset management and strategic objectives.
- Provide informed recommendations to senior leadership on consortium-related risks, opportunities, investment decisions, and long-term asset strategies.
- Support continuous improvement of consortium governance, operational processes, and stakeholder engagement practices to enhance efficiency and value delivery.
Safety, Regulatory and Risk Management
- Champion a strong safety culture across all marine, offshore, and subsea activities, ensuring safety remains the highest operational priority.
- Lead operational readiness reviews and risk assessment processes to identify, evaluate, and mitigate risks throughout project and campaign lifecycles.
- Ensure compliance with company policies, industry standards, regulatory requirements, and applicable marine and offshore legislation.
- Participate in incident investigations, root cause analyses, and corrective action programmes, ensuring lessons learned are embedded into future operations.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance safety, operational performance, and risk management practices.
- Monitor and manage environmental risks associated with offshore activities, ensuring appropriate mitigation measures are identified, implemented, and verified.
- Promote compliance with environmental regulations, sustainability objectives, and industry best practices across all operations.
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure risks, safety requirements, and compliance obligations are effectively understood and managed.
- Provide leadership and guidance during operational assurance activities, audits, inspections, and regulatory reviews.
- Support emergency preparedness and response planning to ensure operational resilience and effective incident management.

Essential Skills / Experience
- Subsea Marine Delivery Expertise – Experience of delivery across the E2E submarine cable system lifecycle; including cable design, installation, repair, maintenance and decommissioning.
- Stakeholder & Supplier Leadership – Proven ability in procurement and the coordination of contractors, vessel owners, partners, regulators, and customers to achieve delivery outcomes.
- Programme Execution & Risk Management – Track record of delivering complex marine campaigns through effective planning, budget control, risk management, stakeholder management and operational oversight. Project management qualification is advantageous.
Desirable Skills / Experience
- A good understanding of telecommunications subsea infrastructure
- Experience delivering both domestic and offshore marine and subsea operations.
- International travel approx. 4 times per year.
- Work offshore for up to 30 days per year.
- Strong health, safety and environmental awareness.
- Knowledge of subsea cable systems or offshore infrastructure assets.
