HV Substation Protection & Control Design Engineer
Location: Bellshill, Scotland
Salary: £40,000 – £60,000+ (dependent on experience)
Position: Full-Time, Permanent
Are you an Electrical Engineer with a strong background in high-voltage protection and control systems? We are looking for a Protection & Control (P&C) Design Engineer to join an established engineering team in Bellshill delivering critical transmission and distribution infrastructure across the UK.
The Role
In this role, you will take ownership of the design and delivery of robust protection, control, and automation solutions for high-voltage substations. You will work across complex schemes involving transformers, transmission lines, busbars, and switchgear, integrating modern digital substation technologies.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop detailed protection philosophies, control schematics, wiring diagrams, and relay settings.
- Design substation automation and SCADA integration architectures, with a focus on IEC 61850 standards.
- Conduct protection coordination, fault analysis, and power system studies using industry software (ETAP, DIgSILENT, etc.).
- Review multidisciplinary and third-party engineering designs for compliance with UK utility and international standards.
- Support FAT, SAT, site testing, commissioning, and system modification activities.
- Interface directly with DNOs/TSOs, EPC contractors, consultants, and equipment manufacturers.

What We’re Looking For:
- Degree or HND/HNC in Electrical Engineering (or related discipline).
- Proven design experience within HV substation protection and control.
- Working knowledge of modern substation communication protocols (IEC 61850) and power system software.
- Familiarity with UK utility standards (e.g., National Grid, Scottish Power, SSEN) is highly desirable.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to produce precise technical documentation.
