HV Substation Protection & Control Design Engineer

Location: Bellshill, Scotland

Salary: £40,000 – £60,000+ (dependent on experience)

Position: Full-Time, Permanent

Are you an Electrical Engineer with a strong background in high-voltage protection and control systems? We are looking for a Protection & Control (P&C) Design Engineer to join an established engineering team in Bellshill delivering critical transmission and distribution infrastructure across the UK.

The Role

In this role, you will take ownership of the design and delivery of robust protection, control, and automation solutions for high-voltage substations. You will work across complex schemes involving transformers, transmission lines, busbars, and switchgear, integrating modern digital substation technologies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop detailed protection philosophies, control schematics, wiring diagrams, and relay settings.
  • Design substation automation and SCADA integration architectures, with a focus on IEC 61850 standards.
  • Conduct protection coordination, fault analysis, and power system studies using industry software (ETAP, DIgSILENT, etc.).
  • Review multidisciplinary and third-party engineering designs for compliance with UK utility and international standards.
  • Support FAT, SAT, site testing, commissioning, and system modification activities.
  • Interface directly with DNOs/TSOs, EPC contractors, consultants, and equipment manufacturers.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
