Role: Substation Layout Designer

Location: Scotland
Work Mode: Hybrid
Start Date: Beginning of October 2026
Contract Length: 6 months, with strong potential to extend
Extra Info: Accommodation and travel to site costs will be covered if required

The successful candidate will have experience working on major high-voltage substation upgrade projects. They will be responsible for the physical design of the substation, including the positioning of primary equipment, electrical clearances, cable routes and interfaces with the wider engineering disciplines.

Key Responsibilities

  • Producing and updating general arrangement drawings
  • Developing AIS or GIS substation layouts
  • Positioning transformers, circuit breakers, disconnectors, busbars and other primary equipment
  • Checking electrical clearances and equipment spacing
  • Designing cable routes, trenches, access roads and equipment area
  • Coordinating interfaces with civil, structural and secondary design teams
  • Reviewing and updating existing substation drawings
  • Reviewing vendor drawings and technical information
  • Supporting the design of brownfield modifications and substation upgrade works
  • Ensuring designs comply with client standards, safety requirements and project specifications

Ideal Candidate

  • Previous experience designing transmission substation layouts
  • Strong knowledge of 132kV, 275kV or 400kV equipment
  • Experience working on brownfield substation upgrades
  • Experience with AIS and/or GIS substations
  • Knowledge of SP Energy Networks, National Grid or similar UK utility design standards
  • Strong CAD capability and multidisciplinary coordination skills
