Company Description

We are seeking a curious and hands-on Innovations Team Intern to join our Innovations Team - Central Services on a flexible work experience or summer placement basis. This role is a summary placement up to 4 weeks designed for someone with skills or a strong interest in soldering and Design Technology. You will work under the close supervision of our Innovations Manager, getting an introduction to real product development - from soldering and assembly to basic CAD design and testing of Internet of Things (IoT) devices. This is an excellent first taste of engineering and innovation in a safe, supportive, professional environment.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities

  • Learn and practice soldering circuits and wiring sets under close supervision
  • Assist with general product assembly and basic hardware builds
  • Help with basic 3D design/CAD tasks under supervision (e.g., using Fusion 360)
  • Assist with prototyping and testing of IoT devices such as Raspberry Pi, Arduino, and ESP8266 boards
  • Help keep the workshop/lab area tidy, organized, and safe, following all health and safety guidance
  • Learn basic Python scripting to support small tasks alongside the team
  • Document your work, observations, and learning in a simple logbook or portfolio
  • Observe and support the team across stages of the product development lifecycle
  • Ask questions and engage with mentors to build technical knowledge and confidence

Qualifications

  • A relevant qualification in engineer, computer science, or related field. Either Apprenticeship Level 3 or above
  • Industry experience or personal projects showcasing your development and technical skills are highly valued.
