Summer Intern Defence Solutions Naval Architect (Warship Support)
Location: Portsmouth Naval Base (Hampshire). We offer a range of hybrid and flexible working arrangements – however for this role you will be expected to attend your site 5 days per week.
Salary: £25,900 (Pro-rata)
End Date: 10th September 2027

Role Description
Naval architects don’t just design and build ships; we are essential to keeping them safe throughout their life as well. Our understanding of ship design allows us to make critical decisions on maintenance and repair as well as integrating into them new capabilities that give the Royal Navy the advantage.
Core Duties
- Designing structural changes, including using FEA.
- Taking part in inclining experiments to assess the stability of ships.
- Contributing to stability analyses using specialist software.
- Contributing to the dry docking of ships.
- Helping inspect ships to understand their state of repair and come up with repair solutions.

The Defence Solutions Team
BAE Systems provides Radar products and support services to a diverse range of customers worldwide, including the Royal Navy. Becoming a member of the Radar team will provide you with significant exposure to the BAE Systems organisation as you engage with engineering functions across the business, delivering radar capabilities and development, with the radar team covering the whole engineering cycle using the latest cutting-edge technology. Please be aware that many roles at BAE Systems are subject to both security and export control restrictions. These restrictions mean that factors such as your nationality, any nationalities you may have previously held, and your place of birth can restrict the roles you are eligible to perform within the organisation. All applicants must as a minimum achieve Baseline Personnel Security Standard. Many roles also require higher levels of National Security Vetting where applicants must typically have 5 to 10 years of continuous residency in the UK depending on the vetting level required for the role, to allow for meaningful security vetting checks.
Qualification Requirements
As a minimum requirement you’ll need to be on track to obtain, a 2.2 in your Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in: Naval Architecture, Ship Science, Maritime Engineering.
Start date: 21st June 2027
Length of contract: 12 weeks
