Job title: Summer Intern Submarines Product Safety Engineer (Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations)

Location: Barrow (Cumbria). We offer a range of hybrid and flexible working arrangements – however for this role you will be expected to attend your site up to 2-3 days per week.

Salary: £25,900 (pro-rata)

End Date: 10th September 2027

Role Description

Within the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations (DSEAR) team, you will support the delivery of technical risk assessments for sites, facilities and associated projects, helping to ensure compliance with safety regulations and standards. You will contribute to hazardous area classification activities, support risk assessment workshops, and work closely with a wide range of stakeholders across the business. The role also involves supporting meetings, studies and site activities, while providing administrative support to help deliver key safety and project objectives.

Core duties

  • Support the delivery of DSEAR technical risk assessments for sites, facilities and related projects, ensuring activities are completed in line with safety and compliance requirements.
  • Assist with hazardous area classification activities, including maintaining and updating technical documentation and drawings.
  • Organise and support meetings, workshops, desktop studies and site walkdowns to facilitate the delivery of project and risk assessment objectives.
  • Provide administrative and secretarial support to meetings, working groups and risk cells, including the preparation and coordination of relevant documentation.
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with a broad range of stakeholders to support the delivery of DSEAR and safety-related activities.

All applicants must as a minimum achieve Baseline Personnel Security Standard. Many roles also require higher levels of National Security Vetting where applicants must typically have 5 to 10 years of continuous residency in the UK depending on the vetting level required for the role, to allow for meaningful security vetting checks.

Qualification Requirements

As a minimum requirement you’ll need to be on track to obtain, a 2:2 Bachelor’s degree or a pass at Master’s level in the following subjects: Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or another relevant STEM-related discipline.

Start date: 21st June 2027 Length of contract: 12 weeks
