About The Role

The Lead Quality Assurance Engineer at BAE Systems plays a vital role in ensuring the highest standards of quality across our advanced weapon systems programmes. This role involves overseeing quality assurance activities throughout the entire lifecycle of defence products, from development and manufacturing to delivery and support. The successful candidate will be responsible for guiding quality planning, conducting audits, and implementing risk assessments to mitigate potential issues. Working closely with supplier and project teams across multiple sites, the Lead QA Engineer will champion continuous improvement initiatives and ensure compliance with industry standards such as ISO quality systems. This position offers significant opportunities for leadership development, strategic involvement in quality initiatives, and potential career progression into managerial roles within a dynamic and expanding environment. The role requires occasional travel within the UK and overseas, including visits to suppliers and other BAE Systems sites in India and the USA.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess a strong educational background, typically holding a qualification at HNC, HND, Degree level, or equivalent practical experience within quality management environments. Demonstrable experience in supplier audits, with formal qualifications in auditing being advantageous, is essential. A comprehensive understanding of ISO 9001 standards and requirements is required to effectively support compliance and continuous improvement efforts. The candidate should have practical experience working in quality-focused roles, supporting audits, non-conformance investigations, and implementing preventative actions. Proficiency in ERP systems such as SAP for managing quality data, records, and reporting processes is also necessary. Additionally, knowledge of Lean, Six Sigma, and risk mitigation techniques, along with experience mentoring colleagues, will be highly valued.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate multifaceted quality activities across the entire product lifecycle, ensuring adherence to quality systems, policies, and standards.
  • Conduct supplier audits, evaluate supplier performance, and support risk mitigation strategies to uphold industry and company requirements.
  • Manage non-conformance investigations and quality reviews, implementing corrective and preventative actions to enhance operational performance.
  • Support and promote continuous improvement initiatives, fostering a forward-thinking quality culture across projects, manufacturing, and supply chain teams.
  • Maintain accurate quality documentation and reporting within business systems, ensuring compliance and transparency across all programmes.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify areas for process enhancement and implement best practices to improve overall quality standards.
  • Assist in training and mentoring team members and suppliers on quality standards, procedures, and best practices.
  • Participate in strategic planning and review meetings to align quality objectives with business goals and customer expectations.
