West Coast South: Keeping Britain Moving
Stretching from Crewe to London Euston, West Coast South is part of Europe's busiest mixed-use railway—moving millions of passengers and 10% of the UK's freight each year. With over 1,000 miles of track and 64 stations, it's a vital link between major cities and local communities.
As part of the North West & Central region, we serve 1.3 million passengers daily and move 700,000 tonnes of freight weekly—covering a quarter of the national network.
About The Role
As a Support Controller, you will support the management of incidents, accidents, emergencies, faults, and weather-related disruptions affecting the operational railway in the West Coast South route. Working closely with colleagues across Network Rail, customer organisations, and external agencies, you'll help coordinate responses as directed by the Route Control Manager, with a focus on weather management, stranded trains, and Control outputs.

We're looking for a proactive and detail-oriented individual to support the Route Control team in delivering a reliable rail service. You'll play a key role during both normal operations and disruptive events, helping coordinate responses and ensuring the safe and efficient recovery from incidents.
You'll be responsible for providing clear and timely updates, keeping passengers, train operators, and staff informed in line with company standards. Accurate logging of safety, infrastructure, and performance events will be part of your daily routine.
The role involves monitoring and prioritising responses to safety critical alerts from multiple systems, as well as responsibility for delivery of seasonal weather-related activities. You'll also help manage internal and external information flows and produce reports to support decision-making.
You'll work closely with various teams to ensure all systems are used effectively to support accurate incident management, and our response to faults and failures across the network, including directly liaising with responding teams.
Additional Role Requirements
This role will be based out of Rugby ROC.
For this role, there is a requirement to work shift patterns including evenings, nights, and weekends.

Your Experience And Skills
In order to be successful in this role, we would like you to have/to be:
- Good geographical knowledge of applicable Route.
- Experience within a fault management, maintenance, operations, or rail industry control environment.
- Knowledge and demonstrable experience of control procedures, rules, and regulations.
- Demonstrable skill in the use of Microsoft Office package and Control-specific software, e.g., FMS, MIMS, TRUST, TRUST DA, Tyrell, or other communications system.
- Knowledge of Train Operating Companies within the route.
- Good team working skills and ability to make objective decisions.
- Able to influence others and work under pressure.
We would also like but it isn't crucial to have/to be:
- Appreciation of signalling, p'way, and electrification disciplines
- Geographical knowledge of adjoining Routes.
- Working knowledge of the NRN system and its correct use.
- Understanding of commercial/business picture within Network Rail and TOC's.
