Surety Underwriter
Type: Freelance Hourly Contract
Compensation: $80/hour

About the Opportunity
Mercor is partnering with a leading AI research organization to develop high-quality insurance and surety reasoning data for next-generation systems. We are seeking experienced Surety Underwriters and Bond Specialists to create realistic bonding scenarios, evaluate complex credit and underwriting decisions, and assess generated outputs against industry standards.
This role is ideal for professionals with expertise in surety underwriting, bond issuance, contractor credit analysis, surety claims, and risk evaluation. You'll apply your knowledge of contractor financial analysis, bonding capacity, indemnity structures, credit risk assessment, and surety operations to evaluate complex scenarios, review recommendations, and support the development of high-quality surety reasoning systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Design realistic scenarios involving bid bonds, performance bonds, payment bonds, commercial surety, court bonds, and bond-default situations.
- Create and evaluate work products such as capacity assessments, credit analyses, bond approvals, indemnity recommendations, and claim-resolution strategies.
- Develop high-quality reference responses based on industry best practices.
- Review generated outputs for underwriting accuracy, credit judgment, bond-form compliance, and decision quality.
- Identify errors related to financial statement analysis, contractor capacity evaluation, indemnity requirements, obligee obligations, and default-resolution strategies.
- Provide structured written feedback to improve quality and consistency.
- Participate in onboarding sessions and calibration exercises.

Required Qualifications
- 2+ years of professional experience in surety underwriting, surety claims, bond production, or contract-surety credit analysis.
- Subdivision Bonds
- Ability to analyze contractor financial statements and work-in-progress schedules.
- Strong understanding of bonding capacity, indemnity agreements, collateral requirements, and surety credit principles.
- Knowledge of the three-party surety relationship between principal, obligee, and surety.
- Excellent written communication skills and strong attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications
- AFSB, CPCU, ARM, CPA, or similar professional designation.
- Experience in both surety underwriting and surety claims.
- Familiarity with AIA bond forms and public-works bond requirements.
- Experience with contractor default resolution, including takeover, tender, financing, or completion agreements.
- Knowledge of SBA Bond Guarantee programs, funds control arrangements, or emerging contractor programs.
Compensation
- $80/hour following onboarding completion.
- Weekly payments.
- Independent contractor engagement.
