Joining Breedon means becoming part of a team that values excellence and is committed to making a positive impact.
Position Overview:
We are looking for an experienced and motivated Surfacing Chargehand to join our surfacing team in the Highlands. Working closely with the Surfacing Foreperson, the Chargehand will act as a key member of the surfacing crew, supporting the day-to-day coordination of operatives and helping to ensure works are delivered safely, efficiently, and to the required quality standards.
This is a hands-on role which combines practical surfacing duties with responsibility for supporting and guiding the wider squad. You will assist the Foreperson with organising the team, coordinating activities on site, and ensuring everyone works in line with company procedures and safe systems of work.
The role involves working outdoors, travelling to different sites and working a range of shifts, including night work where required.

- Act as a key point of contact for the surfacing operatives, providing guidance and support on site
- Assist with organising the squad and allocating tasks to ensure work progresses efficiently
- Assist with the laying, raking, levelling, and finishing of asphalt materials
- Support the safe and effective operation of surfacing plant, tools, and equipment
- Help ensure the correct materials, plant, equipment, and PPE are available for the work being undertaken
- Support site preparation and general surfacing activities before, during, and after works
- Assist the Foreperson with site briefings, toolbox talks, and communicating site requirements to the squad
- Monitor work activities and highlight any issues affecting safety, quality, productivity, or progress to the Foreperson
- Carry out routine checks of plant, equipment, and PPE and report defects promptly
- Promote a positive safety culture and challenge unsafe acts or conditions where appropriate
- Report safety concerns, incidents, defects, and near misses promptly
- Liaise with the Foreperson and wider project team to support successful delivery of works
- Maintain a clean, organised, and safe working environment
- Work flexibly across different sites and shifts, including night work where required

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
