At Heidelberg Materials, we're looking for a Surfacing Operative to join our surfacing team and help deliver high-quality road construction and maintenance projects safely and efficiently.
Whether you already have experience in surfacing operations or are looking to develop a long-term career in the industry, we can provide the training, support, and mentoring needed to help you succeed.
About The Role
As a Surfacing Operative, you'll work as part of a surfacing gang under the direction of the Foreman, supporting the safe delivery of road surfacing projects. You'll play an essential role in producing high-quality work, operating specialist equipment, and ensuring the safety of colleagues, customers, and the public.

This is a physically active role that offers excellent opportunities to develop new skills and gain experience operating a variety of surfacing machinery and equipment.
Key Responsibilities
- Work safely at all times, taking responsibility for your own safety and that of others.
- Assist with the day-to-day activities of the surfacing gang.
- Produce quality workmanship that meets required specifications and standards.
- Wear and maintain all required PPE.
- Assist in the upkeep, servicing, and maintenance of plant and equipment.
- Report any equipment faults or maintenance concerns promptly.
- Learn to safely operate surfacing machinery and equipment, including:
- Paving machines
- Chipping machines
- Dumpers
- Rollers (vibratory and deadweight)
- Loading and excavation shovels
- Compressors and powered tools
- Carry out manual and mechanical level control activities.
- Handle and distribute coated materials safely and effectively.
- Distribute chippings both manually and mechanically to specification.
- Undertake Banksman duties where required.
- Assist with identifying and locating underground services and apparatus.
- Support the team with other duties as reasonably required.

Essential
What We're Looking For
- Full UK driving licence.
- A strong commitment to health, safety, and teamwork.
- Reliable, hardworking, and willing to work outdoors in varying conditions.
- Positive attitude and willingness to learn new skills.
Desirable
- Previous experience in surfacing, highways, construction, civil engineering, or a similar operational environment.
- Experience operating construction plant or machinery.
Don't worry if you don't have previous surfacing experience. Full training and mentoring can be provided for the right candidate.
