Surgical Care Practitioner (SCP) in Surgery
The Surgical Care Practitioner (SCP) in Surgery is required to be an experienced registered healthcare professional working at an advanced level in clinical practice in either colorectal, HPB, or UGI. They will be experienced in their specialty but will be expected to train to cover across specialties for less complex procedures.
The SCP will be expected to exercise autonomy and decision-making in a context of complexity, uncertainty, and varying levels of risk, holding accountability for decisions made. The SCP will be able to manage clinical care in partnership with individuals, families, and carers, responding to differences in cultures, demographics, and populations. Utilising critical analysis and synthesis in dealing with complex problems across a range of settings, enabling innovative solutions to enhance people's experience and improve outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate Care: Coordinate the care of patients throughout their surgical pathway with the multidisciplinary team and clinical services to ensure the effective management of this group of patients, including intraoperatively, which may include the insertion of ports, suturing, acting as a robotic bedside assistant.
- Accountability: Accountable for own actions in accordance with their professional regulatory body requirements.
- Corporate Objectives: Contribute to corporate objectives, acting within local, Trust, and statutory guidelines and policies at all times.
- Clinical Care: Lead and deliver clinical care, across a variety of settings, according to national and local guidelines, ensuring delivery of evidence-based care and working towards the Trust vision of providing a World Class Service.
- Assessment and Diagnosis: Undertake an initial assessment to determine differential diagnosis, utilising advanced critical thinking and decision-making skills, deciding when necessary to refer to senior clinical colleagues.
- Patient Care: Act autonomously to assess, prioritise, and provide expert clinical care which contributes to the patients' treatment plan to ensure that optimum physical, psychological, and social care needs are met and ensures quality care.
- Investigations: Request and interpret relevant investigations to facilitate the development of the patient’s management plan.
- Critical Care: Initiate the management of patients who are critically ill or deteriorating within the scope of practice.
