Cardiac Surgeon Recruitment

The Birmingham Women’s and Children’s Hospital Foundation Trust is seeking to recruit experienced cardiac surgeons to join the middle-grade cardiac surgery team on fixed term contracts, with posts available for 6-24 months.

Job Details

  • Location: Birmingham Children’s Hospital
  • On-call Rota: 1:4
  • Start Dates: October 2026 - April 2028

Requirements

  • Qualifications:
    • GMC registration and License to Practice
    • Or requisite scores in the IELTS or OET to be eligible for GMC registration
  • IELTS Requirement:
    • Applicants from outside the UK must possess the requisite IELTS certificate to prove proficiency in English

Duties

  • Assist in the operating theatre and perform some procedures under supervision
  • Perform invasive procedures on the ICU
  • Organize weekly MDT meetings
  • Organize operating lists
  • Conduct surgical rounds on the cardiology wards
  • Support the out-patient post-operative nurse-led clinic

On-Call Rota

  • Altered to comply with the New Junior Doctors’ Contract
  • Rota: 1:4 non-resident
  • On-site Until: 2230
  • After 2230: Off-site if the Fellow can access the ICU within 15 minutes
  • Responsibilities:
    • Day-to-day management of post-operative cases on the ICU
    • Presentation on ICU rounds
    • Conducting business rounds on the wards
    • Organizing the operating list for the next day
    • Liaising between ICU and surgical teams

Adult Congenital Heart Disease Service

  • Location: Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham
  • Opportunities:
    • Participation in the fortnightly MDT and the weekly operating list
  • On-call Duties: None at the QE Hospital
