Survey Engineer – Rail Infrastructure
We are seeking an experienced Survey Engineer to support a client within the public sector with a portfolio of rail infrastructure projects across the UK. You'll provide specialist surveying expertise across the planning, delivery, assurance and technical oversight of survey activities that support the design, maintenance and enhancement of the railway network.
This is an excellent opportunity to work on complex rail projects involving track infrastructure, stations, civil assets, level crossings, embankments, telecommunications installations and major enhancement programmes.
The role combines site-based surveying activities with office and remote-based data processing, modelling and assurance work. You will work closely with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders while ensuring survey outputs meet the required technical, quality and safety standards.
📍 Locations: Swindon, Bristol, Cardiff, Birmingham or York (Hybrid working with regular site visits)
📅 Contract Length: 12 Months
💼 Engagement: Inside IR35 (Umbrella)
💰 Rate: negotiable
🔒 Security requirements: BPSS, PTS, AC and DC competencies required
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and deliver topographical and rail infrastructure surveys.
- Establish, validate and maintain survey control networks.
- Manage GNSS survey control and coordinate transformation methodologies, including SnakeGrid.
- Process, extract and validate point cloud datasets and survey deliverables.
- Provide technical surveying expertise to multidisciplinary project teams.
- Review survey specifications and ensure deliverables meet technical requirements.
- Carry out quality assurance and verification of survey information.
- Support survey governance, standards development and best practice initiatives.
- Coordinate with third-party survey suppliers and resolve technical issues.
- Identify opportunities to improve survey methodologies, technologies and delivery processes.
- Produce high-quality survey outputs, documentation and technical reports.

Essential Experience & Skills
- Significant railway surveying experience.
- Proven experience leading track and rail infrastructure surveys.
- Strong understanding of modern topographical survey techniques.
- Experience establishing and managing GNSS control networks.
- Practical experience using SnakeGrid transformations.
- Experience processing and interpreting point cloud datasets.
- Ability to independently review and assure survey outputs.
- Experience with CAD and point cloud processing software.
- Strong stakeholder management and communication skills.
- Personal Track Safety (PTS) certification.
- Experience working within Network Rail standards and environments.

Desirable Experience & Qualifications
- Degree in Surveying or a related discipline.
- Chartered Surveyor, Chartered Engineer, or working towards professional accreditation.
- Membership of a relevant professional body such as RICS, ICES or CICES.
- Experience supporting major rail enhancement or renewals programmes.
- Knowledge of railway safety management systems and risk assessment processes.
- Experience developing survey specifications, standards or technical guidance.

Ideal Consultant Profile
You will be a self-sufficient rail survey professional with strong technical capability, a track record of delivering complex survey projects, and the ability to operate independently while collaborating effectively with stakeholders across the railway infrastructure environment.
